CenterPoint Rate Increase September 1, 2025
Heads up y'all! Electricity bills in the Houston area will increase in September due to increases in CenterPoint delivery charges. This will hit your bill regardless of what retail electricity provider you're with.
Delivery rates in CenterPoint will climb from 4.2392 ¢/kWh to 5.8104¢/kWh, an increase of 1.57¢/kWh. For an average household using 1000 kWh a month, that’s an extra $15.70 on your September electricity bill. (If you're in a south suburb of Houston and have TNMP, your rate climbs from 6.1526 to 7.2055¢/kWh.)
Electricity delivery rates change twice a year on March 1st and September 1st. TDUs have fixed costs for operations that they need to cover. In the summer months, when usage is higher, they charge a lower rate per kWh. In the fall and winter, when usage drops, they charge a higher rate per kWh to make up the difference.
You'll see this increase on your bill. Yes, you'll pay this delivery rate increase even if you have a fixed rate electricity plan with your REP. Only the energy charges are fixed, the delivery charges are passed through at cost on your bill.
You can't avoid these rate increases, but you can keep your bill low by making sure you shop for a fixed rate plan with a low energy rate, and by lowering your usage.
