CDL Training and License

I have a friend I’m helping in trying to jump start his CDL career. However, the costs I’ve been seeing are expensive. Is the cost to obtain the license really costly? My friend is essentially homeless and makes very little money. Is there companies that will pay for the training? Is there something he can qualify for to help cover the cost?
