Cancer – No insurance
Hello everyone, My MIL was diagnosed with cancer and has no insurance. I’m just completely at a lost on where to begin, where to start, or who to see ☹️ Hoping y’all could possibly help.
Some backstory: My MIL went in for a mammogram about a YEAR ago and was diagnosed with carcinoma. She hid this from our family and just now revealed this to us a few days ago. Due to her religious beliefs, instead of seeking medical attention, she decided to begin seeing a naturopathic doctor for her treatment. Again, the original diagnosis was a year ago, so we have no idea where it’s at now or what it looks like. She has been super resistant to seeing a doctor again but we were able to finally talk her into going back for some additional testing. Especially because one of her hands/arms had began swelling out of nowhere over this past weekend. We went to an urgent care on Sunday where they took her blood and referred her to a doctors office for another mammogram. We’re still awaiting the results of her blood work and should have the mammogram done by the end of the week.
She has NO insurance but is employed, making around 50-60k a year. Her employer doesn’t offer insurance but was paying her extra money on the side to cover some of the costs of insurance. Obviously, she was not using this extra money for that. My FIL also works but makes decently less money than she does. They have one kid under 18, and two adult kids who work that all live with them. I believe they pay for insurance for the youngest kid.
My question is, where do we go from here? Is there additional testing besides bloodwork or a mammogram that we should be asking for? If needed, considering she has no insurance, what is the best way to go about treatment/chemo? Who/where should we reach out to? Does she qualify for Medicaid? Should we consider out of the country (Mexico) or state help? 😭
Any and all help, suggestions, advice, etc. Would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you guys
