Canceling an energy provider experiences…

Has anyone had experience canceling an electricity provider because you moved out of service range, moved to a house with an energy provider already in place, left Houston etc? Do they usually honor it or is it a big hassle?

Trying to renew for a 1 year contract but may be leaving Houston temporarily 5-6 mo in (nothing confirmed though), ideally don’t want to pay the $300+ cancel fee
