Brief Analysis of every Astros draft pick (will be updated)

Rounds 1-10

  • Rd 1, Pick 28: Walker Janek, C. Fills the catcher position in our farm nicely as the top backstop prospect for 2024, with a big-league ready bat that showcases pop and bat speed, good baserunning, excellent framing, and an affinity for throwing out opposing baserunners.

  • Rd 3, Pick 101: Ryan Forcucci, P. A pitcher who primarily relies on a mid-90s fastball, a whiff-heavy mid-80s slider, a good changeup, and a decent but not stellar curveball. Struggles with injuries and could fill a bullpen role to conserve his usage.

  • Rd 4, Pick 131: Parker Smith, P. Though he didn't receive much attention as a pitcher who bounced around collegiate baseball teams with mediocre numbers and not nasty stuff, he throws a lot of innings and doesn't shy away from the zone, using his wits and command to get through the lineup. Could be an innings eating back-of-the-rotation starter.

  • Rd 5, Pick 163: Cole Hertzler, P. Hertzler's profile is very similar to that of Forcucci, with a nearly identical pitch mix (although a little more inclined towards break over velocity) and concerns about his longevity as a starter. Has upside as a reliever.

  • Rd 6, Pick 193: Caden Powell, SS. One of the top JUCO prospects, Powell is a hard-hitting shortstop who put up ridiculous numbers in short spans.

  • Rd 7, Pick 223: Joseph Sullivan, OF. A utility outfielder who can slot into any position, Sullivan has a good bat and is an aggressive, efficient baserunner. He also gets hit by pitches a lot.
