Bosnia in Houston at Cafe Adel
A trip to Bosnia without leaving Houston
I’ve said this before and I’ll state it again here, you can take a trip around the world to all of the different traditional cultural cuisines without ever having to leave the Houston area. Cafe Adel in Houston, Texas is no exception. It’s been over ten years since this family run restaurant opened its doors to bring to Houston a taste of Bosnia like no other.
Bosnian cuisine is heavily influenced by both western and eastern food traditions. At Cafe Adel, you will find touches from Turkey, Mediterranean, and Central European flavors intertwined with every dish. The restaurant was moved to its new location in the Galleria last year. There’s a really nice area outside to enjoy your lunch or dinner. The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated and features a great selection of wines and beers from the Balkans. When you visit the restaurant, you will probably find Chef Anel Abdulovic steering the restaurant whether that means making sure each dish is prepared to perfection or actually preparing the dishes himself. His mother, Senada, is working her skills to make the traditional dishes along with a kitchen crew that keeps the place spotless. Dusanka Grujie is also front and center at the restaurant to make sure that every visitor leaves with the best experience of food and beverage.Â
The Kitchen Tour Went Down Like This:
Cafe Adel has a beautiful brick oven which is used to finish the preparation of many dishes. The Behind the Scenes Kitchen Tour will show you first hand how some of the traditional dishes are created.
The Houston’s Great Eats Feature happened like this:
We tried several things on the menu which included:
1. Cevapi – traditional Bosnian style grilled beef links served on lepinja bread
2. Burek which is a homemade filo dough pastry. We tried the ground beef, cheese, spinach and potatoes. Check out the video to find out how this fascinating dish is made – I was blown away by the process. Momma SenadaÂ
I can’t tell you which ones were my favorite because I loved them all! The restaurant also has a full bar with a wide selection of Balkan wines and beers to accompany the menu.
I highly recommend Cafe Adel in the Galleria!
