Boating Across the Trinity Bay

Houstonians help a novice boater out! My fiancé and I just moved to Mont Belvieu and are looking to purchase our first boat. The closest boat ramps are Anahauc and the Buddy McBride ramp in Baytown. I’d like to be able to cross over into Clear Lake at a minimum, even better if we could make it down to Galveston. What type of boat should we be looking for? I’ve read that Deck Boats & Bow Riders with a deep V-hull would work well but I’ve also head there’s no way a Bow Rider could handle the choppy water we get down here. Needless to say I’m confused!
