For the final out of the game, Blue Jays commentators stated it was the first career at-bat at MLB level for JJ Matijevic. In other words, it was his MLB debut as a hitter.

Was there any specific reason Astros had decided to send him into the batter's box at that specific situation?

The pressure could have been too much for him. His first at-bat should have been in a very lopsided game where the outcome of the game was not going to be determined by how JJ Matijevic does.
