Best nearby primitive (tent) camping? Just for a night or two.

My fiancé and I are avid hikers and campers. We just got back from Big Bend with some extra firewood and wanted to spend a night or two camping near by, within an hours drive or so.

We were thinking we would try Galveston but campsites on the bay side are available only due to renovations on the gulf side. Has anyone stayed there at the state park campgrounds on the bay side? How was it?

Sam Houston NF is also an obvious choice, but I’d like to hear from you guys where you like to get away from the city! No answer will go unconsidered!
