Beaumont ISD's newest charter program exposes Mike Miles conflict of interest as HISD superintendent

This article explains how at the beginning of this school year several failing schools in Beaumont became Third Future charter schools.

Mike Miles is the CEO of Third Future. According to the article, this charter company is the only one approved by TEA to take over failing schools. Miles has a vested interest in tanking the ratings of HISD campuses to ensure that they operate under Third Future.

From the article:

"We visited Third Future Schools (before our decision), and we got an opportunity to look at the model that they're implementing and see their model in action," Allen said. "It really felt like they will be able to implement their model here with impact. We engaged in what is called an 1882 partnership with Third Future and that partnership allows them to receive additional funds from the state to operate."

Had the district opted against pursing the new partnership, the schools could have been closed by TEA.

The district is expecting the schools' rankings to rise out of the danger zone under Third Future Schools, the only TEA-authorized turnaround organization, The Enterprise previously reported.
