Baso is good ... in some cases, very good ... but is it worth it?

Tried Baso over the weekend. We ordered eight dishes (one of which was pistachio ice cream) and two of the least expensive bottles of wine on the list. Bill approached $200 per person. This isn't a complaint, but it's relevant context. Baso isn't cheap. I'm not even sure it's reasonably priced. But it is good; in some cases very good. Even so, there are some missteps. The dining room is (somewhat self-importantly) spare; it's also deafeningly loud. So loud, in fact, yelling is necessary at times. Cornbread (about $20 if I remember correctly) was good, but hardly as special as the price would suggest. A 13oz ribeye was tasty, but at over $100, a better steak can be had for two-thirds the price at the likes of Hillstone. What can't be found at Hillstone is the delicious ($76) pork chop and the luxuriously creamy (over $20) basque cheesecake. The wine list is tough–some terrific bottles but extremely aggressive pricing. A $26 Malbec we routinely drink at home was listed at well over $80.

We'll be back, but probably not soon. Overall, our evening at Baso was a good one. And if prices were a bit more reasonable, this review would likely be glowing.
