Houston ISD has undergone several big changes in the 2024-25 school year, including updates to the district’s bus routes, academic calendar and teacher pay.

The special-called meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 8 at the district’s Board, Business & Technology Center, located at 20200 Eastway Village Drive, Humble.

The Lake Houston area’s Hispanic population grew by nearly 20% over five years, rising from 89,447 residents who identified as Hispanic in 2018 to 107,236 in 2023, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

Humble ISD officials have opened 13 new playgrounds at the district’s elementary schools, with 12 more planned to open by fall 2026.

Each of the six Lake Houston-area ZIP codes saw population growth from 2018 to 2023 except for 77345, which saw its population decrease from 28,804 residents to 27,574, census data shows.

The Humble ISD Police Department was honored by trustees at the board’s Dec. 10 meeting for becoming the first public school police department to receive Academy Training Provider status from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

Officials with Skero’s Furniture and Mattress celebrated a Nov. 29 grand opening of their new location in Humble.

Humble ISD is poised to appoint new leadership following the board’s Nov. 26 vote to formally terminate Superintendent Elizabeth Fagen’s contract.

Trustees voted 5-2 in favor of naming Interim Superintendent Roger Brown as the finalist for the position at the board’s Dec. 17 special-called meeting.

During the board’s Dec. 9 meeting, Chris Todd, Denise Morrison and Nicole Doerre Peters were sworn to serve as trustees for positions 3, 4 and 5, respectively.
