In Defense of… Ross Blacklock

I’ve been thinking about it and I’m planning on making a series of posts similar to this one about under-preforming/subpar players and looking at potential factors that could contribute to their downfall outside of “they just suck” i’ll be posting to other football Subreddits besides this one but i’m going to post here as well when it applies. alright that’s all i have to explain about the concept.

Ross Blacklock has been well, frankly extremely disappointing in his rookie season, for someone named the best pass rusher in the Big 12 he has not even come close to fulfilling expectations. some people even comped him to Gerald McCoy, so what went wrong?

Scheme: Blacklock was a Rush Defensive Tackle coming from TCU’s 4-3 scheme, this obviously led to a struggle for this skill to translate to a Nose Tackle position in the Texans 3-4 defense. this would obviously hamper anyone’s ability to produce but with the Texans changing to a Tampa 2 defense that would have him as an interior rusher, there’s still a good chance for this to get better.

Development: Player development has been lack luster in Houston for a while now. it’s certainly not a model place for a rookie to grow as a player when surrounded by such middling mediocrity, or sometimes outright garbage

Conclusion: Ross Blacklock is a below average pass rusher put in a terrible situation. his lack of production is about 60% his fault and 40% the fault of the texans organization in general. I also anticipate that he has a bounce back year in 2021-2022 and i’ll guess he will have around 4 or 5 sacks with 40 or so total tackles.

Being Practical

Deshaun Watson sitting or being benched wont fix anything. thatll just make him and everyone else pissed off. if he doesn’t want to be a Texan he won’t be one. so instead of dying mad about it. let’s try to think of what a watson-less texans would be like. Trade’s that you actually like Go!

I have 2 personally with 2 teams

Jets and Dolphins

Jets Get

Deshaun Watson

Texans get

2 2021 1st

2022 1st

2022 2nd

DE Quinnen Williams

or a trade with the dolphins.

Dolphins Get

Deshaun Watson

Houston gets

2 2021 1st round picks

2022 1st round pick

2022 2nd round pick

CB Xavien Howard

Eagles hiring Colts OC

This is Huge. this means that we are practically garunteed EB unless if Nick Caserio just starts power tripping and hirs Brian Daboll or something. with Cal Mcnair now sucking Deshauns dick in the owner suite we might be able to actually DO something next year. even if he wasn’t the playcaller i 100% believe that EB can build a powerhouse offense and be a leader for the team which is really what we need right now.

Position Swaps

a thread for players you think could be moved from one position to another to best capitalize on their skillset.

mine is blacklock from NT to DE. he was from a scheme where he was an interior pass rusher not entirely different from the role Aaron Donald plays. and when in a 3-4 interior pass rushers are usually DE’s he can’t stop the run and when on the center we havent seen him pass rush so we might as well try moving him a bit to the outside imo. maybe JJ can teach him a thing or two.

Should i follow in the footsteps of Pineapple Man?

im considering trying out for my HS Football team as a kicker (dont have the build for anything else and i have a horseshoe kidney so contact sports are a no go) so the question lies do i follow in pineapple man’s footsteps? i’ve gotten massively into football over the past year or two and this is my 2nd season watching all of the texans games so most the desire to actually play is only flairing up now so. yeah. thoughts?
