Hey, so today my 15-year-old sister had “ran away” (quotation marks because she left for a friend’s house without telling anyone) and my worried family posted pictures of her on the neighborhood’s Facebook page so we could find her. Not even an hour later, I (18M) and my younger brother (16) receive calls from these two men who claim to be part of the cartel and that they had my sister captive. They asked for 10,000 dollars which I don’t have or they would kill her and then us. I, falling for their little trick, asked friends and family for college money as the men specifically told me not to tell anyone what was really going on. Seeing as nothing was able to be done, I started to break down and panic at the fact that my own sister was going to die and that my family and my lives were in danger. They hang up after yelling a bunch of different profanities at me, I call the cops, and they find my sister not too far away from my house, and they find out that the number wasn’t even real. My question is, how did they get my and my brother’s numbers? Even though my sister is safe in our home right now, I still worry about the fact that those people got my and my brother’s phone numbers.
