I need to install a VHF radio antenna on the roof (for the aviation band). It's a funny shape (discone), about the size of a TV antenna. I can't do it because it's too dangerous (my wife will kill me if I climb high enough on a ladder where I could get hurt). Anyone worked with a good handyman or TV antenna installer that could handle this project?

Live Oak Grill closed https://houstonnewmedia.org/live-oak-grill-closed/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=live-oak-grill-closed Sat, 21 May 2022 19:41:13 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=857a6f93051a78dccbf0ae181645e576

This is mostly aimed at folks that life near 290 and the Loop. The Live Oak Grill on Hempstead, which recently went through a re-imagining that did not please many of their old clientele, now has a "Closed until further notice" sign out front and on the door. Anyone in the know on what's happening? I'm hoping the rebranding has failed, and their gonna go back to the old staff and menu.

Anyone remember a horror based cable public access program in Houston? https://houstonnewmedia.org/anyone-remember-a-horror-based-cable-public-access-program-in-houston/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=anyone-remember-a-horror-based-cable-public-access-program-in-houston Sat, 30 Oct 2021 21:43:40 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=f389dbbec14e5d9b05859af1599edcbb

I've been watching some of the black and white horror classics this week, showing because of Halloween, and it reminded me of a program on one of the Houston public access cable channels. It was a goodly number of years ago. It had a host that was a mad scientist in a butcher shop looking lab, surrounded by cut up victims. He wore a mask and did commentary during breaks in the movies, all old B&W grade Z horror movies. It was on the weekend, late nights. Anyone else recall this? Remember the name or source of it?

Legal disposal of oil filters https://houstonnewmedia.org/legal-disposal-of-oil-filters/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=legal-disposal-of-oil-filters Thu, 13 May 2021 16:15:57 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=3ea3e7dd914f25edf122434cbd02ba42

I just got back from taking a load of household waste to the Houston Environmental Service Center on Neches Street. Along with some old gas and some aerosol cans, I had some used oil filters. The guy there told me that they don't take them there. Well, I can live with that - they always think of some reason to not take something. But then he told me that they were just considered trash, and I could just put them in the garbage can at the house. This used to be illegal in Texas. I suspect it still is. I have a call in to 311 to look into it. In the meanwhile, has anyone heard about that law being changed? Is it legit now to toss used oil filters in the trash?

Tipping for restaurant curbside pickup https://houstonnewmedia.org/tipping-for-restaurant-curbside-pickup/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tipping-for-restaurant-curbside-pickup Sun, 05 Apr 2020 23:13:25 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=7113791a868b7d880165bb12570148a7

What is the consensus on what to tip for curbside pickup? I've been getting a lot of to-go lately, in part to try and keep some of my favorite restaurants going until this is over. I've been tipping half my usual rate - am I too high, too low? What do you think is appropriate?
