Food near Washington/Sawyer or POST? https://houstonnewmedia.org/food-near-washington-sawyer-or-post/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=food-near-washington-sawyer-or-post Wed, 11 May 2022 18:52:28 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=783f4c1af4adbf20ca48eca0f4c76fde

I'll preface this by saying, yes I've hit up Yelp/TripAdvisor and the like but have always gotten better info from this sub.

I am headed to POST for a show and was planning on eating there but from what I've read on here it seems as though the food is just meh and expensive.

So what else might be interesting in these two areas?

My compatriot doesn't eat chicken or I'd be hitting up Gus's. Ideally looking for something on the cheaper/quick/casual side but if theres a great happy hour some place that would be walking distance from POST or from her place that would be awesome as well. Platypus looks interesting but I'm unsure how it actually delivers.

PS: If anyone has had food at POST and was actually excited about it, what did you have?

Hello y'all!

My Chinese girlfriend is more or less stuck here and getting pretty bored (as incredibly entertaining as my life is). Because she is on a B1B2 visa she isn't legally able to work, but is getting tired of feeling like she's not contributing.

We are in the Spring area, so somewhere close to here would be ideal but if there are any places near(ish) the Park and Ride drop off locations downtown downtown and/or weekends, those would be great too!

She is great with kids and could help with translations (though not quite to the level of medicine or legal stuff).

I found some cursory things from a search but nothing Chinese specific and/or some things that would require her to have her own transportation or would require me giving her rides while I would be at work.

Any ideas of where we might look to help her help others? Thanks so much!

Hey y'all! I have a friend visiting Texas for the first time and would love to show her some of the beautiful bluebonnets I have been seeing pictures of.

I know most good spots are going to be in the Hill Country proper but I was curious if there are any good hot-spots about 1.5 hours max from about 45/99.

My dumb self forgot to include these foods in my last post and since y'all were so much help last time I thought I'd reach back out for more feedback.

In terms of 'fusion food' if there are any places that you think are particularly emblematic of Houston's 'melting pot' culture would be awesome. I'm thinking along the lines of JQ's 'Tex-Mex BBQ, Crawfish and Noodles, Khoi Viet-BBQ.

I've heard crawfish season is going to be fairly weak this year because of the late freezes but still interested in possibly getting into some.

I've had Treebeards gumbo but thought it was just okay so looking for other options. Also have plans for going to get the fried chicken and maybe more from Himalayas.

Edit: Best sushi happy hour places?

Reddit has always proven to be more reliable than Trip Advisor and most certainly Yelp and the search results look a bit dated, so I turn to y'all.

Have a first timer here and I'm looking for recommendations for the best spots for the food listed. Bonus points if any are near the Menil, Butterfly Exhibit, Waterwall, or any other parks/touristy things.

Also, where she is coming from doesn't really have a lot of access to good Thai, Indian, or gyros/shawarma so any recommendations for those would be welcome as well!

Thanks y'all!

If anyone is down on food, the JIB deal isn't bad. The Papa Johns one ends up being more expensive than any of their other on-going 'deals' they have all the time anyway. (Plus it is certifiably awful)

thought I'd might share since this could very well be the last time this season.

Gather Round the Kool-Aid pitcher: Why we are going to win Game 4. https://houstonnewmedia.org/gather-round-the-kool-aid-pitcher-why-we-are-going-to-win-game-4/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=gather-round-the-kool-aid-pitcher-why-we-are-going-to-win-game-4 Sat, 30 Oct 2021 20:00:01 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=6cbf5b6bd17212b87ab45d29b6280005

First in the the undefinable: I sincerely believe the Braves were going to be undefeatable last night: Their first home World Series game in 20+ years, fans going nuts the entire time, using their last remaining true starter (more of that to come) puts them in a position that if they don't win that one they knew they were going to be in big doo-doo. Similarly, Garcia had an excellent outing which leads me to believe he could be useful out of the pen moving forward if he is needed.

Last night was obviously a strong performance by Andersen. To get in front of the our fans that are going to emphasize we chased at more balls than need to, this is simply indicative of a strong performance and good stuff. His stuff was moving (as was the strikezone).

Our boys had zero chance to practice or take BP on the field. This obviously favors the Braves. Especially with our OF all playing in different spots than their norm. (Though KFT amirite?) Factor in the weather in an unfamiliar ballpark and I think it's another advantage for the Braves. Weather tonight looks substantially better- warmer and slightly less chance of rain. Sunday looks perfect for a Framber game vs yet another BP game for the Braves (who will hopefully further depleted after tonight)

Bad calls on both sides, so that seems to be a 'push', though my bias does tell me it hurt the Astros a bit more despite ump scorecards since I don't give much stock to their 'runs favored' metric for a few reason.

Their first run was a mere inch or two from Bregman's glove, if he knocks that down it saves a run. Their second was one single mistake to a hot hitter from Graveman who has otherwise been lights out in the postseason.

Lastly, if you believe in math then we have to believe the regression to the mean of our hitters will lead to better contact against their lessor bullpen. If even just two of Altuve, Bregs, Brantley, and Yordan get it going we can push runs across- Dusty has said he prefers national league managing- this post has given me nothing but more confidence in him. The good news is that we are working walks, giving us opportunity.

An aside: I can't find it currently, but I would imagine our BABIP was a dip lower than average- especially in key situations (not sure how you quantify that). Though that is just conjecture.

Lastly, I believe we see at least somewhat vintage Zach today. Granted its very unlikely he goes through the lineup more than once but that could mean a solid 3 innings if all goes well. Backed up by Odorizzi for an inning or too then El Reptilo for one or two then I'd have to believe Stanek and Raley are ready as is Pressly- possibly even Graveman though 20+ pitches is a bit much for two days in a row.

Finally, and I can't believe I'm saying this, our bullpen has inspired a lot of confidence in me recently (furiously knocking on wood). If we can keep that up and actually get bats going we'll be good.

Game 5 would mean a Framber start and yet another BP day for Atlanta- we knock out at least one or two of their 'starter's or relievers early, we are going to set ourselves up for Game 5 very well. We'll obviously have cross that bridge when we get there but game 6 is shaping up good now with Framchise slated to be on the hill- not sure who they would throw then.

TL;DR- Braves weren't going to lose that game and despite being no-hit until the 8th we made it a ball game. Our bats return to their normal selves, bullpen keeps its hot streak alive and we take the next two and finish in Houston in 6.
