Trevor Bauer

Should I call a lawyer? Apartment advice.

I rented an apartment with my girlfriend, our lease started in August. We paid the first 3 months up front. Month to month after that. Montrose.

For the first 3 weeks our apartment did not have hot water, when it was fixed we had a gas leak. Holes were put throughout our apartment in order to identify and finally fix this (5 days before the holes were fixed). We already had many roaches but this lead to a ridiculous amount in our apartment (1st floor, 2 story building). We killed 26 the first night, it’s been about 2-3 per day since despite spraying.

Throughout this we have had water seeping through our floor. We first called maintenance 3 weeks ago. After multiple visits and a plumber, management has finally decided our apartment is not liveable.

They have offered us a similar apartment. I inspected it today and killed 17 cockroaches upon entering. Also, the windows are installed backwards. Meaning the lock is on the exterior of the building and anyone could break in by simply pushing.

I have to leave Houston for two weeks very soon and am concerned for my girlfriend.

What are my options? Should I call a lawyer?
