Houston redditors, can y’all help me feed my homeless friend, Ms. Wonita Scott?
Here’s the skinny: I met a very kind, well-mannered elderly African American woman that is currently living on the benches at Hermann Park. I’ve been bringing her meals for the past few months but my schedule is making it so difficult. I’m worried about her when I’m not able to visit. If you’re in the area, could you drop by with a meal or say hey?
Here’s the full scoop if you’re interested: Back in March, I would always take my kids to the park near the Houston Zoo/Hermann Park. On our way out, we asked an elderly African American woman that was sleeping on the bench if she wanted our donuts & kolaches (we had extras). While speaking to her, you could immediately tell that she did NOT belong on that bench. She is very sincere, well-spoken, well-mannered and not crazy. She reminds me of my late grandma in an odd way. Come to find out, that her daughter kicked her out and she somehow found her way to Houston. My husband and I had a really bad feeling as we were walking away, we couldn’t leave her out there. So we set her up in an Airbnb for a week, fixed her wagon, fixed her up with a cooler & food and since then, she’s back to her spot. I have been visiting with her nearly 1-2x a week since then to bring her food, but recently it’s been nearly impossible with my 2 young kids and increasingly busy work schedule.
I don’t normally reach out to the community, but as a Houston-native, I know what we’re capable of. If you’re interested or able, can you help me drop off a meal or say hello to Ms. Wonita Scott? I’ll drop her current location (via Apple) here and give you a description of what she looks like (red wagon & big umbrella, can’t miss it)
I typically get her milk, OJ, spanish nuts, almonds, Doritos and pre-made food from the grocery store. I know this is oddly specific but I’ve been shopping for her for months now lol. Here’s a pic of us when we first got her in the Airbnb as a reference. I’m sure many of you also have questions on her situation and whether she’s interested in permanent living, social security checks, Adult Protection Services, homeless shelters and even reuniting her with her family… I’ve brought it up and have done it all – she refuses and is more interested in seeing where God takes her next on this journey on the bench.
