For anyone who thinks the Analytics v. Gut-Feel Dichotomy is killing the Astros, go re-read Astroball
After the Jeff Bagwell quote, I have seen a LOT of people over-reacting to how this is affecting the Front Office’s mindset. But the thing that bothers me is that the tug-of-war between Analytics and “gut-feel” is what the Astros are built on, not Moneyball 2.0. Astroball goes in depth on this, half the book is about how balancing the two opposing viewpoints is the key to success, not ignoring one over the other.
Could the comments be concerning? Absolutely. But how far they swing in that direction will decide, not comments of using analytics too far. Let’s wait and see who is named GM and then we can panic about the sky falling.
