Calgarian here. I am wondering how much Houstonians are aware of their urban sprawl problem and what things are you guys are doing to combat it.

Urban Sprawl issue in Calgary

Here in Calgary, we have realized or are at least in the middle of realizing our urban sprawl problem. We have some organizations and journalism sites and even youtubers who raise issue about our urban sprawl problem. It’s even talked about in our local MSM like CBC when council is ruling on more suburban development or on our dead downtown. Some of our councillors are strong opponents to urban sprawl, while at least others are aware of the problem and that it is a problem.

We often post pictures or use Houston has an example of what NOT to become. No offence. Our two city’s are a lot alike in a plethora of ways. We see urban sprawl on steroids in Houston while Calgary is drinking whey protein. Some cite climate change as the reason to combat urban sprawl. I, personally, just think urban sprawl makes a city dead, unattractive, ugly, inconvenient, boring, and spreads our tax dollars thin.

Question

As I look for solutions to combat our urban sprawl, I began looking to you guys — the kings of urban sprawl. But google has left me empty-handed in this research. So, what are you guys doing about it, if anything?
