Any teachers in the group? What’s the job like (in general)?

Teacher here in a little predicament.

I’m a licensed teacher that has been overseas for the last 10+ years. Been teaching in-person since March 2020. Long story short, I need to travel this summer for time-sensitive medical treatment that I can’t receive locally in country. The boss sent everyone an e-mail saying that he likely won’t hold our job if we travel and don’t return “on time.” Normally get two months summer vacation, this time just one month to account for mandatory quarantine. Medical treatment will take 1.5 – 2 months. There’s also the risk of the country suddenly changing travel rules and I end up stranded with no possibly to return within a reasonable time frame.

I do need to prepare for the worst case scenario. Thinking about applying to school districts/private schools in Houston area. I’m not from the area and have never worked as a teacher in the US before. Why Houston? I own property in the area.

What’s the job like? Kids? Workload? Is it something manageable or is it overwhelming and leads to burnout?

I’m used to teaching well-off kids in East Asia for reference.
