This time, I was crossing San Felipe from Winrock (south to north). I waited for the crosswalk signal to turn white so I could cross legally...

Which Barnaby’s Cafe locations would you recommend? https://houstonnewmedia.org/which-barnabys-cafe-locations-would-you-recommend/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=which-barnabys-cafe-locations-would-you-recommend Fri, 26 Aug 2022 19:32:55 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=7b53db43188723215c62fdb0061c6480

Are they all the same quality-wise? Or are some better than others? I have some friends from out-of-town and they were interested in dining at one while they're here. I've only been to the original and baby's locations so I can't really speak on the other locations but would be up to try one with them.

I neither bike/drive, so bike/car parking isn't relevant and the area doesn't matter at this time since we're still making plans for the weekend and Barnaby's would be a stop. It'd be to know if they excel better at certain meals/dishes than others (breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner) and we don't have any dietary restriction.

Here's the locations they have listed:

  • Heights
  • River Oaks
  • Museum District
  • Midtown
  • Woodway
  • Fountainview
  • Downtown
  • Original
  • Baby Barnaby's

It looks like Cafe Express is opening its 4th location in the Houston area, over in The Woodlands. Unlike current locations, it has a newer contemporary style decor. Cafe Express - The Woodlands (coming soon). The actual address isn't listed yet, but maybe it will be at or near its previous Woodlands location at 9595 Six Pines Drive, Spring, TX 77380.

This is kind of surprising considering they killed off maybe like 8 locations in the area over the past 5 years. Plus they still haven't brought back their weekend breakfast/brunch menu. Hopefully, this means a local-ish chain is reviving itself.

Café Express reduced to 3 locations in Houston https://houstonnewmedia.org/cafe-express-reduced-to-3-locations-in-houston/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cafe-express-reduced-to-3-locations-in-houston Mon, 08 Feb 2021 17:11:56 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=2c11eeaaa29e47a1da996e4174e7a011

I got an email today saying my local Café Express is no longer around and suggested my new default Café Express. Source: Café Express website

The locations they're keeping: 1. River Oaks 2. Meyerland 3. Town & Country

The locations they recently closed: 1. Greenway Plaza 2. Downtown

They used to have other locations in Houston like Champions Forest, Uptown, Voss & Woodway, and probably others I'm not even aware of that closed in other recent years.

Thoughts on Memorial City Mall interior renovation https://houstonnewmedia.org/thoughts-on-memorial-city-mall-interior-renovation/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=thoughts-on-memorial-city-mall-interior-renovation Sun, 24 Jan 2021 18:51:30 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=56d56e0196badcfd508ce7b3e7be9f0c

So Memorial City Mall did a new revamp of the mall's interior design throughout 2020 and finished around in time for December. The link has images of the new look around the mall.

What are your thoughts? I've seen it in person a few times and I much prefer the previous look. The new look seems to be more geared towards females. The floral ceiling design, huge suspend lampshades, and tons of teal paint reminds me of girls I know. The teal also seems to be incongruent with their overall cobalt blue color scheme their branding promotes. This is another reason why the previous look was better as it built upon the brand's identity. I do like the new greenery, even if it's fake, as it provides a more relaxing feel. I miss the tables near the fireplace one could do some light work while munching/drinking the mini food court items.

Houston’s Mayor’s Mansion (theoretical) https://houstonnewmedia.org/houstons-mayors-mansion-theoretical/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=houstons-mayors-mansion-theoretical Tue, 28 Apr 2020 19:19:52 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=ed51dd37542656ef15dd919f411b5292

This is a theoretical idea on what could have been the official Houston's mayor's mansion. I'm not advocating for a mayor's mansion due to taxpayers' cost. Though they can arguably serve as a ceremonial property for hosting dignitaries and guests, as well as special events for the city and non-profits without the mayor and the mayor's family actually living there (like what Blooomberg did in NYC).

Only 4 American cities have an official "mayor's mansion". If Houston had one, which property should it be? Based on what I've seen of other governor/mayor mansions, it would probably have to fall within these guidelines:

  1. Historical Relevance - having served a relevant connection to the city's history or home to past mayors or moguls or civic figures
  2. Proximity to City Hall - the closer to city hall, the more shorter the commute for the mayor and security, and the more likelihood it will be used for receptions of dignitiaries
  3. Accessible for Tours - most governor's/mayor's mansions are generally open for tours of the common rooms and grounds, and rarely the private quarters

The current mayor worked with HAR to promote historic home purchasing in historic districts. Maybe some good candidates can be found there too.

Someone on HAIF suggested before of the Kirby Mansion at 2200 Smith Street, I think it meets the three criteria very well. Any better candidates?
