Where is a good place to walk? Before living here, I had a park close by that had 1/2 mile loop, I think and what I liked about it was you were pretty much always able to ...

North Side: I wish panhandling was illegal in Texas. People that do this have been blocking traffic, jumping out behind drive thru signs, interrupting asking for money and to place orders. They congregate at a lot of places that I just have to stop going too. Approached in parking lots too. North Side, Near Heights. I don’t have a garage and I share my recycling bin with a neighbor. Can’t put all cardboard in there. It’s in my car, where to take it to recycle? My local recycling get full in the morning and won’t take more cardboard. Med Center Workers: How do you handle FLOODING and work? https://houstonnewmedia.org/med-center-workers-how-do-you-handle-flooding-and-work/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=med-center-workers-how-do-you-handle-flooding-and-work Mon, 12 Oct 2020 04:25:40 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=74aa18ea3ff66ec4f1752b8efff38684

Hello,

Currently living in College Station area. I've always lived on the out-skirts of flood areas (basically areas people would vacate too), never directly in Houston. I might be starting a rad tech program in Houston and plan to work afterward in the area for a bit, lets say 3 years total time in Houston.

I need to keep my commute time short as possible. So I will most likely be renting a condo in the med center area.

I used to work for Baylor in Patient Access (outside flood areas) and anytime we had a hurricane, we would have huddles and managers basically would state people had to show up to work or there would be consequences. Hospital was small and they would even offer a patient room for staff to sleep in to ensure they were on premises in time for shift if weather was too bad.

I literally lived a block away so this was never an issue.

I'm getting huge anxiety over this. I've seen flooded areas of med center even if I live close by if public transit isn't running or I can't use car b/c flooded areas, how am I supposed to get back to my dog (who takes meds)?

I have family to vacate back to in College Station, but with the amount of hurricanes Houston gets I know work will not allow me the opportunity to vacate every time a big hurricane hits.

  • I'm also concerned if I make it through a flood event, I'm locked in a lease and I won't be able to get out of it if building gets messed up, even if I live on second floor..will that unit get electricity, will central a/c be out, what about the mold from downstairs, how long will construction be for units to return to normal, will I have to wade through water to get to my unit, what about the disease, snakes, alligators in this water -- these questions aren't so much for answering but things I've thought about.
  • I've also seen people wading through water during these events...how am I expected to get to work with this?

I know since hospitals are open 24/7 so there is pressure for workers to show up even in extreme instances.

Med Center Workers -- How have you handled bad flood events, especially if you lived near med center?

  • TL;DR: I will be working in the med center and living nearby for at least 3 years, I have a dog who takes meds, I'm concerned about the move to the area due to flooding events. How do you guys handle getting to/from work when the entire area is flooded? How do you handle the aftermath? I'm really dreading the move.
