Hi.
I’m new to this landlording thing and had a quick question. In Texas, we get to pick who we want our power provider to be.
My tenant is moving out at the end of this month and I need to get the power bill back to my name for a very short period of time. Currently, the power is in their name with their own account with some provider. I am sure they will be switching it to their new home soon.
In my case, is it actually possible to see if we can add this rental house to my main primary residence’s power account temporarily? I have a renter lined up but need probably a month’s worth of work to the house before it’s ready, so I really only need to cover the power bill for a month.
Or is the only option to go find a 6-12 month power contract for now as a “new service”? how does that work if I only need it for 1 month, do I have to pay a early cancellation fee (most of these new power contracts have fees like this) if a new tenant comes in and requests service in their name?
Or should I call the renter and see if they can transfer the utilities to our name? Not sure how that would work though if it’s in their account?
Any help would be appreciated.
