Registering Car Purchased Out of State
Hey everyone – I recently purchased a used car under a lien in California and shipped it directly to my home state of Texas. Since I shipped the vehicle to TX, I have to pay the TX sales tax of 6.25%. When I visited the Texas DPS to get the vehicle registered, they asked me for a copy of the title with my name as the new owner, Form TX-130U, insurance, inspection, and ID – the issue is that I won’t be able to get the DPS an updated title with my name on it anytime soon from the California DPS.
I told the TX DPS the title is being transferred from the dealership that sold me the vehicle to the California DPS to update my name as the owner of the vehicle and the bank as the lienholder. The California DPS will take a while to change owner info before sending the updated title to the lienholder (bank)
Texas has this strict law in place where any new owner of a vehicle should have their name on the title within 30 days from the date of purchase in order to NOT get penalized in the form of additional sales tax on top of the 6.25%.
The dealership already provided me with the sale contract of the loan and the California form 262 (Vehicle Transfer and Reassignment Form) but TX DPS isn’t even looking at this — All they need is an updated copy of the title with my name as the owner and the bank as the lienholder on it. Are there any ways for me to request additional information from the California dealership or the California DPS in order expedite the title transfer process so I can get a copy of the updated title to the TX DPS in order to register the vehicle and NOT pay a fine on top of the sales tax? Any help would be really appreciated!
