There I was all of 18 years old at Wrestlemania X7 in the Astrodome. A stranger taps me on the shoulder, hands me a business card, and tells me that they do backyard wrestling and to check them out. So we did check them out AND OVER TWENTY YEARS LATER WE STILL TALK ABOUT IT BECAUSE THAT IS HOW AMAZING IT WAS.
I THINK it MIGHT have been on the East side of town (but definitely could be wrong), it was in someone’s big backyard, they had a hand written sign at the end of their long driveway, there was well over 100 people, they had an announcer, they were selling concessions, there was a home made ring built on a trampoline frame, I think there was formerly a tennis court where the ring was (could be wrong), there was an entrance tunnel that the wrestlers would come out of with full entrance music and light show. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I’ve been to several WWE events, including Wrestlemania, and this was BY FAR the best wrestling entertainment I have ever experienced.
I saw a guy do a double back flip off the top rope onto a dude laying on a table next to the ring THREE TIMES before he broke the table. Dudes were getting hit with legit metal folding chairs (the kind they had in public schools), the chairs were bending. People were diving out of the ring onto people many feet away from the ring. It was as if these guys saw those “best of backyard wrestling” videos they used to sell on tv and thought “these clowns are amateurs, let’s show the world whats up”, AND THEN THEY DID.
Does anyone here know about these guys that did the incredibly epic backyard wrestling? I’d love the opportunity to tell once again them how amazing it was and how my buddies and I are still talking about it over twenty years later.
Side note: my buddy’s car died after we attended backyard wrestling and we still joke about how that car gave its life so that we could experience what must be the world’s best backyard wrestling ever.
