For context, head coach candidate Chung was told by an interviewer that he wasn't the "right minority"

Now why this could possibly be the Texans is because during the offseason, the only team that hired a head coach that was the "right minority" happened to be Houston. The only other minority head coach hired was Saleh who is also of the "wrong minority" while every other vacancy was filled by white men and it has been no secret that Houston was specifically looking for a black head coach. While I don't think it was the Texans who directly made that call, the fact that it could have been the search firm McNair hired will only make people think the Texans did it if of course it was the firm.

Not only is Walker of a similar size to Taylor but both have very similar play styles (although Walker might be a big lighter on his feet). Another plus is that not only did he play for two teams in completely different leagues in 2020 (and completely different systems I might add), but when Bridgewater got injured he managed to step in and do enough to win despite having what one can imagine where very limited practice snaps in Carolina due to COVID restrictions and the fact that Carolina was at the time installing in Bridgewater into their system and probably got all the attention in practice.

Now that Carolina is going with Darnold and will probably be looking for a backup that is more similar in size and playstyle, it doesn't hurt to make some sort of offer to the Panthers for a guy they probably don't care too much for in the first place. Good insurance in case Tyrod gets injured (again) and at least the Texan offense won't be too different if Walker has to step in

All Caserio has to do at this point is to build a team that can win more than 4 games and it will be seen as an improvement, even breaking even will make him look like a franchise savior

Watson on the other hand has used up his one free " I hate my team" card. If he can't get past the divisional round or even worse doesn't even make the playoff in a team that doesn't have any picks (due to them trading them all away to Houston) or is stuck in a situation where the team has no cap (due to his contract) then all the blame for his team's failures will be on him while rumors about him being unhappy will follow him forever, its minimum conference championship or bust for him

If you look at the situation the Texans find themselves in, it really comes down to Cal McNair's obsession with hiring Caserio from the Patriots and refusing to move onto a permanent GM while waiting for Caserio's extension with the Patriots to end at the end of the 2020 season. The fact that there has been no move to interview any other GM candidates such as Reddick and Dorsey despite them being on the open market suggest that there was possibly been some backdoor off the books talks with Caserio (via Easterby) and that Cal is simply waiting until his end of contract. Hiring someone else would be throwing away 3 years of waiting for nothing.

Then there is the situation in New England itself. With the Patriots struggling to get wins in a post Brady era it does seem that the magic from the past 20 years is gone and the era of Patriots dominance is over. With no potential championships in sight it would be no surprise if many personnel in New England start looking at their career prospects elsewhere. With Bellihick potentially coaching in New England until he dies while holding the official GM title it is feasible that Caserio look to another team to put his own stamp on, with this comes the possibility of McDaniels to come with him as not only does he know he will never be "Bellichick' and hanging around New England won't do anything for his own career. That combined with his working experience with both Caserio and Easterby it is very possible these two will be the future tandem in Houston.
