Read MoreI know it’s a different sport, but the role and basic functions of general management is the same across all the major US sports. Morey has been making deals for the 76ers for only a couple days after being hired a few weeks back, and he is already putting the slumping 76ers in championship contention.
They needed to offload a massive trash contract of over the hill Al Horford that nobody thought was movable and was going to plague the franchise for years to come. There was also a lack of shooting around the two franchise cornerstone players who are both shooting limited. He made two great moves to get two of the best shooters in the league, and drafted another. The team that got swept out of the playoffs this year, could now come out of the conference this season.
I’m not expecting a GM to come in and make this team a superbowl contender in one season building out a football roster takes a lot longer, but just wanted to say that picking a right GM for the job is the most important thing, and can quickly change the fortunes of this franchise. Just thought it was kinda ironic that a former houston gm proved that.

Bill O’Brien tanked this team. It has to be REBUILT, mostly on the defensive side of the ball.
The only superstar caliber player on the team, is Deshaun Watson. He was just given a big long term extension, so he is the teams guy going forward. If you ask me, hes a top 5 talent at his position. The most important position in football by FAR. He is 25 years old, entering his prime. So putting this guy in position to succeed, on this cap strapped and draft ransacked team means some tough decisions WILL have to be made.
The goal is to trade high salary assets to lower the super high salary cap, and bring in picks. We would then have free agency and the draft to start reviving the defense that’s complete trash right now. That’s the quickest way to hit the reset button on the watson/post obrien era. Otherwise your looking at a longterm rebuild into Watson’s early 30s near the end of his contract extension…if hes not happy by then, we may not be good for a LONG time. this is the only way. Thanks for reading.
