Hello! I am looking to rent a 1 bedroom apartment in the city center (Med Center, Montrose, Midtown, West U). The budget is around $1500+.

I noticed that there are several listings from independent landlords that are a lot cheaper ($1100-$1300) than places managed by property firms in the area ($1500-$2000).

I don't really use amenities (pool, grill, gym) in fancy apartments. And I like the hardwood floor, closed kitchen, gas stove, window in bathroom that I saw in independent listings.

Does it make sense that I should go for independent landlord? Is there any caveat that I am not aware of? Do these old buildings have pest and safety issues?
