Houston, TX: Please don’t wait until Election Day to vote. The new machines & paper scans mean it takes longer to process.

I went to vote today. There was no line whatsoever. Even with that, though, the process took about 15 minutes. I feel the ID check was a bit faster, but dealing with the long ballot and the pieces of paper and then scanning your paper in at the end takes time. I can’t imagine how it’s not going to be hideous on Election Day. Vote now!

Early voting is available today until 7 PM.
Thursday, Nov 3, from 7 AM to 10 PM.
Friday, Nov 4, from 7 AM to 7 PM.

After that you have to wait until Election Day.

Houston, TX: Is there a way I can help people to get to voting locations? Or other ways I can help voters feel safe at polling locations that may have "observers"?

Sorry to ask here but googling just gets me to a lot of voter registration and polling place info. I just wondered if there’s a group or charity that helps people get to the polls. While typing this out I realized it may be a dumb thing to ask. I’m just so extremely discouraged that people might not vote because of lack of access or fears for their safety.

Houston, TX: Can you help me find a specific moon cake?

Last year at Mid-Autumn festival time, a Chinese acquaintance brought me a box of the most delicious moon cakes. They were packed full of dried fruit and nuts – kind of like a Fig Newton with nuts. I’m not Chinese, I don’t know what these are called, and the acquaintance has moved and doesn’t remember where he bought them. This is not the salted egg yolk kind.

I have tried using search tools, but I thought I’d also ask you in case anyone here could help direct my search. Thank you for any help you can give.

I plan to go exploring your suggestions in the next couple of days and will post my findings!

Houston, TX: It’s been a year since we lost BeerlympicAthlete. Raising a glass in his honor tonight.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since BeerlympicAthlete passed away. I still miss his great community-building posts and hole-in-the-wall restaurant recommendations. Just thought I’d put this reminder up for those who remember! Toasting his memory with some homemade red ale.

If anyone is in contact with his family, please tell them he’s being remembered. Kelly & I communicated for a while and then she ended up erasing all of his account because of trolling, which is something else I’m sad about.
