I hear a lot of negatives about Houston, what are some positives about living near there?

As the title reads, most of what I read are negatives about living in or around Houston.

Drivers, Flooding, Hurricanes, Property Taxes, Property Insurance rates, etc etc.

I close on a house in 11 days Northeast of Houston and I’d love to hear some personal experiences as to the positives of living around the city?

Property Insurance – Costs/companies?

Hey all – just closed on a house near Houston, currently the state I live, with a house value of $400,000 my property insurance is $600 a year. For a house valued at even 3/4 of that in a non flood zone, the lowest I’ve been quoted is over 5 times that amount at $3400 a year. Not only that the year my current home was built was 1963 and the new home 2007.

Is anyone getting a better number with a reputable company?
