Apartment rent refund help
So here’s the deal – I moved out of my apartment complex a few weeks ago, with 60 days prior notice. Prior to the move, management agreed to charge a prorated rent for the final month since I’d be moving out before the completion of a full month.
A week after I moved out, I checked my accounts and noticed that I was charged a full months’ rent. What happened was that the apartments’ rent payment system on which I had set up my autopay is apparently garbage and isn’t linked to actual move out dates. I called up management and was rudely told it was my fault for relying on their own system and any refunds would need to be processed by check.
It’s been a couple of weeks and I haven’t received any check in the mail. What are my options here? Is there any consumer body I can lodge a complaint with?
EDIT: I’ve moved out of the country so options are very limited. The prorated amount was written on the official move out document, which a friend whom I had asked to help handover keys also gave over to management, so I do not have anything in writing.
Here’s a rough timeline of events:
Early May: Officially started move out proceedings, with a move out date of 06-Jul. Prorated amount agreed.
29-Jun: Physically moved out and left the country.
02-Jul: Autopay for full month deducted.
06-Jul: Noticed deduction and called management, was told refund check would be sent.
