What’s this in the sky over TMC last Thursday? Looks like it’s falling. Help me understand the Houston park systems, especially Brays Bayou https://houstonnewmedia.org/help-me-understand-the-houston-park-systems-especially-brays-bayou/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=help-me-understand-the-houston-park-systems-especially-brays-bayou Tue, 22 Feb 2022 16:55:31 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=493a6b3a1feff0e640a26968f0b186bb

I'd like to access Brays Bayou between Stella Link and Buffalo Speedway more easily. There are small residential streets like Lookout Court and Glen Arbor Drive that run along the park but are completely zoned no parking. Another option is to park on a residential street south of S Braeswood or north of N Braeswood and cross the big streets - not a great option during rush hours or with a pet or stroller in tow. Ideally, I suppose someone with more stamina and available time could access the park somewhere beyond that stretch and bike, run, walk to reach the green space with the pavilion.

I called 311 and asked if parking on Lookout Ct or Glen Arbor Dr could be made available to the public. I was told that the park "is for neighborhood use only" and "only belongs to the residents there", and that the City of Houston doesn't administer it. The operator thought my next option might be to call Harris County but wasnt sure. Frankly, the operator didn't seem to be able to explain who was in charge of the greenway and insisted the area "belonged to the people who live on that street only". She said that was the reason Brays Bayou did not show up as a park on her map.

So can someone explain this? Who operates the Brays Bayou greenway? Whose money was spent to build an exercise and social pavilion that only a few can access? Are there ways to get this space accessible to more people?

Questions about native Texas wisteria in Houston gardens https://houstonnewmedia.org/questions-about-native-texas-wisteria-in-houston-gardens/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=questions-about-native-texas-wisteria-in-houston-gardens Fri, 09 Apr 2021 13:04:17 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=86df4837c43b1b21eef588cf84ecdcaa

Houston gardeners who grow texas wisteria can you please fill me in on your experience with it? How did it fare in the freeze? How about during our drought years? I'm trying to get a feel for whether this is a plant I want to try after my passion fruit vines couldnt be saved during the freeze. Also, I've checked the Aggie site about them, but still don't have a great idea about what native birds or insects they attract. Thanks!

Let’s talk about alternative activities that can be done from home… https://houstonnewmedia.org/lets-talk-about-alternative-activities-that-can-be-done-from-home/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=lets-talk-about-alternative-activities-that-can-be-done-from-home Tue, 17 Mar 2020 15:31:38 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=b2d4fabd8532f24d5189f77af63e074e

Lots of folks of all ages are stuck at home, so before cabin fever sets in why don't we start compiling a list of to do's? I just got my update from SpotTheStation (Time: Tue Mar 17 8:39 PM, Visible: 5 min, Max Height: 86°, Appears: 11° above SW, Disappears: 29° above NE) and it made me think about Houston specific events and opportunities that can be done from home. https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/

Does anyone know of local theater performances, musicians, etc that are performing online? Any local museums offering online tours?
