Film Lovers/Houstononians – Friends of River Oaks Theatre asks us to Take Action

I just happened to learn about this org after finding a flyer at the local bike shop. Wanted to spread the word on what they recommend to the general public if they are interested in preserving the theatre. I am copying and pasting the text from their page below, Take Action (saveriveroakstheatre.org)

I’m a Houston native and grew up going to Greenway and to the River Oaks Theatre to watch all the indie gems. For anyone else that appreciates and wants theatres like this to exist in our city I think it’s worth a shot to reach out! Houston, one of the largest cities in the country, deserves/needs spaces like these.

——————-

First, if you have not done so already, we suggest that you fill out our ongoing survey which we are sending to Kimco.

Second, you can make contact with Kimco by email, letter, postcard or phone and let them know how important the preservation of River Oaks Theatre is to our community. Share your stories. The more personal the contact method, the better. Phone calls and letters are more personal and have the most impact.

TIPS FOR YOUR MESSAGE

  • Do it now. Time is of the essence.
  • Be polite but firm in your demands.
  • Personalize your message. Make sure the recipient knows why saving the theatre is important to you.
  • Energize your network. If you can get two or three friends to do this, you’ve doubled or tripled your impact. And if they do the same…

Lead Testing Services that does home visits?

I know I can Google… so hopefully somoene can help before I get downvoted, but I have googled and made calls and even asked the city.

My daughter has lead levels I find disturbing (but not high enough to require medical intervention) and would like to test things around my house, beyond what I can do with a 3M stick, e.g. soil and water, dishes maybe

I’ve called a few places:

  1. First place only trains how to lead test, but doesn’t perform testing
  2. Next place only does commercial locations
  3. Last place has yet to call me back

Rather than sending to a lab I’d like a visit to our house if possible. Does anyone know of a service in town that does that sort of thing? I remember a home inspector checking for lead years ago with one of those fancy guns, but have yet to find that to be the case nowadays.

Galena Park Air Tonight

Galena Park already smells bad on occasion, but tonight it smells dangerously bad. I had to run inside. I don’t even know how safe we are being indoors, especially the children? Does anyone know how that works? I think it faintly smells in here but it could be in my head. The news said GP residents did not have to worry about the spill from a couple of days ago, but according to yesterday’s TCEQ data “Toluene levels over threshold at Galena Park A1667 [53] [72]. 5.22 ppb. Toluene harms the nervous system.”

Wanted to take this opportunity to share a link to the Kuuikbot – Kuukibot (@kuukihouston) / Twitter that shares Houston’s air quality reports

and a link to TCEQ’s Environmental Quality Complains page, incase anyone else is experiencing this. – Make an Environmental Complaint – Texas Commission on Environmental Quality – www.tceq.texas.gov
