Read MoreFor those who are not familiar with us, I founded and run the only sumo group in Houston, I just wanted to share a quick video that one of our members made, and if any of you enjoy sumo and are in the greater Houston area, I hope that you’ll come to a practice session (Keiko) with us!
You may have seen us at some food festivals and such, we’ve done collaboration events with Otaku Food Festival, Tokyo Night Festival, Anime Houston, Collect-A-Con, Night Market at the Asia Society Texas Center, and many more!
I want to note that our Sumo club is for EVERYONE, you don’t have to be a huge person to do it, most of our members are actually not all that large! Many of our guys are considered “small”. We don’t have any active women members, we actively seek to have more women members! Also, some of our members do it just for fun, some want to compete and do compete, while others just do it for the workout and the fun of it! (However the practices are entirely made for competition training)
Sumo is the ultimate contest of might, a bout where two enter a ring and only one remains within it seconds later. The Way of Sumo teaches its students to stand their ground and maintain perfect discipline and form to meet whatever challenge they face. This is Sumodo or “The Way of Sumo”.

I just got off a video call with the sumo teams in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio about our plans for Texas Sumo 2022… Lets just say we have tons of events planned for the future, some of which will be events in Houston! Some of our events involve just demos within our team with audience participation afterwards (even kids can do it!), however once a year we host a tournament where all the Sumo teams in Texas and sometimes other states comes in to compete! If you want to be involved (Women can do it too! We have 1 woman member, please join so she has a partner!), please feel free to DM me on here or on Instagram @ Shogeki.Sumo! We train 3 days a week at the premium health club O Athletik, Sundays 3-5pm, Tuesdays 7-9pm, and Thursdays 8-10pm. This is a very niche group but we’re very open to accepting everyone so we can all share our love in sumo! First Houston Inter-Stable practice session over at O Athletik ✊ O Athletik has been a great home for Shōgeki Sumo, and we have had a good amount of new members and interest, therefore we wanted to host a training session led by Justin Kizzart of Dark Circle Sumo from Austin who just placed 2nd 🥈 place in Men’s Lightweight for the North American Tournament in Vegas!!! Those who medal’d in the North American Tournament will present Team USA in the World Games, so we will have multiple former and current National Team Members! Hey y’all, I posted before about Sumo Wrestling and a lot of y’all liked it. So I just wanted to let y’all know that I as well as a bunch of other Texas Sumo Clubs will be in Houston for this event! I have invited Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio to come, and they are all confirmed to come! We will have an AMAZING tournament, it will be open-weight, which means you may see someone weighing just 140lbs vs someone weighing 370lbs!!! If you want more updates about Sumo, or if you want to ask me questions about this event, I’ll try to answer on this post but I am mostly on Instagram under JackieScamm! Other than that, the event will be ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! First off it’s FREEEEEE, second, it’s a CHARITY EVENT, third, this event is specifically made to combat misconceptions in Japanese culture, but most specifically foods!
