Harris County 911 did not take breaking and entering seriously — arrived 45 minutes after call
I’m a custodian of a house across the street from me. The neighbor, who was my friend, died in February and his family asked me to watch it, including inside, and report anything that might be wrong. His garage had already been broken into and the word is the house is empty, no doubt.
As I was driving to my house, I saw a black man in a fluorescent green vest enter the backyard of my neighbor. I kept an eye on the exit points because if it’s a utility reader, he’ll be out of one of those only two exits. 10 minutes later and he still did not exit. I called 911 and waited for 45 minutes for an officer to arrive.
When the officer arrived, the first thing he said was “You know they’re allowed to go in your back yard.” I explained “But they also come back out.” He was surprised.
He searched the back and the inside. There was no forcible entry and he wasn’t inside, obviously. I suspect he saw me watching the house and jumped over the gate in the back into a storage lot.
When the officer left, he said “maybe he was with the cable company.” I couldn’t believe it.
Edit: Sheriff’s office.
