For Whatever It’s Worth: On the 1st versus 2nd overall pick

I understand everyone is probably livid right now, justifiably so. However, I think it’s good to remember a few things.

  1. The draft is inconsistent and scouting quarterbacks has never been a sure thing. Bryce Young may be the best QB in the draft or it could be CJ Stroud. It could also be some random pick in the 4th round, though obviously it is more likely to be Young, Stroud, or even Levis.

  2. There are at least two high-quality quarterback prospects in this draft and we have the no. 2 pick, drafting a good quarterback prospect is far from off the table.

  3. The pre-draft process sees QB rankings move around a ton, especially when there’s more than one viable top 5 QB pick. For those who are fans of Young, Stroud could be viewed as the top pick. For those who are fans of Stroud, the inverse could be true.

  4. If we are extremely concerned about drafting the quarterback we expect to go at 1, there’s always an option to trade up; the Bears would probably like to get Jalen Carter or Will Anderson, and trading down with Indy (at the earliest) puts that in jeopardy, as the Cards and Seahawks could easily both go defense.

If you’re still pissed, that’s fair enough. But, I think it’s good to recognize that sitting at No. 2 overall is still a pretty good situation, even if this wasn’t the preferred outcome by any of us.
