Kenny Pickett pretty compelling…

Just watched his 2021 highlight tape and every snap he took against Tennessee and Clemson and I’m really impressed. He’s emerging as the consensus top QB of this class and now I know why.

I had been completely dismissing the idea of us potentially drafting a QB with our first pick as we have plenty of other needs and the narrative surrounding this QB class was that it sucked, but I now think we should strongly consider Pickett alongside Aidan Hutchinson, Thibodeaux or Stingley. Especially if we get a 2nd first rounder from a Deshaun Watson trade.

He really reminds me of Justin Herbert, but with better accuracy in college lol. Really wouldn’t be surprised whatsoever to see the Lions take him ahead of us (if they finish with worse record)

Should we consider trading Tyrod?

With how Mills looked Sunday and grim outlook for the rest of the season, it probably makes the most sense to play Mills the rest of the year so we can know if we have something going into 2022.

Tyrod is on a cheap expiring contract and I could see an aspiring playoff team with QB uncertainty (Seahawks, Steelers..etc) giving us a 3rd or 4th rounder for him once he’s cleared to return.

I loved what I saw from Tyrod the first 6 quarters of the year, but at this point would rather us see what we have in Mills.

What’re your thoughts?

David Culley is incompetent and needs to be held accountable

Using a timeout on 2nd and 1 with 2:23 seconds left was a death sentence. He essentially was betting that our defense would be able to hold them from gaining a first down.

Instead of keeping the timeout, letting it hit the 2 minute warning and giving the Texans assurance they’d get the ball with 1 minute left no matter what (because they’d have 2 timeouts and it would be a goal to go), he decided to bet the outcome of the game on the Texans defense making back to back stops on 2nd and 1.

Culley clearly has no understanding of mathematics. This is worse than BoB level game management f**k ups. This is the NFL. If you’re a head coach in this league you should be an EXPERT at all aspects of game management and he clearly showed zero understanding of how timeouts affect game clock.

It’s not even worth ranting about how unbelievably stupid it was to waste a timeout up 7 in the 4th to kick a 56 yard field goal with a kicker whose missed 2 extra points. Missing the kick gives the Pats 7 more yards of field position than if we miss the 4th down conversion.

This s**t isn’t ok. These are inexcusable lapses in football logic and basic math/common sense. He should have never been a head coach

We’re only 1 game out of first place

The AFC South once again is far and away the worst division in football. The Texans are currently 1-0 against the division and only 1 game out of first place.

Tyrod Taylor will be back in week 6. Let’s forget the rain storm game against the best team and fans in the NFL ever happened…

There’s tons of meaningful football left for this team. We play a beatable Patriots team at home next week..lets find a way to win and pass the baton to Tyrod at 2-3

I get that a lot of us want to tank, but tanking doesnt really work in the NFL…

We should seriously consider signing Josh Gordon

At 6’3 225 Josh Gordon compliments Brandin Cooks super well and we desperately need a 2nd WR. Chris Conley sucks and Miller/Amendola/Collins can stay at slot WR.

There’s zero risk in taking a flyer on Josh Gordon and he fits well with the rest of the veterans on the team that are trying to prove their worth. He led the entire NFL in receiving yards his 2nd season in the league. Let’s give him a shot

Great to see 2020 draft class producing

It’s been great seeing Jonathan Greenard and Ross Blacklock emerge as impact players early on in the season.

Heading into the season, the 2020 draft was looking like a complete bust and I assumed that we’d need to re-build our defense essentially from scratch after this season. We seemed almost entirely devoid of young talent on the roster and I figured we would need 2 draft classes and a bunch of free agent signings before having a good defense, but Greenard, Blacklock and a few of the veterans added to the roster are accelerating our rebuild timeline.

Obviously we’re a long ways away from the offseason, but we might be in a pretty good spot at DT and OLB/pass rusher next year. If we can extend Justin Reid/Jacob Martin, we’ll cut Whitney Mercilus and will only have glaring weaknesses at DE, CB, G and WR.

Its huge for the future outlook of our team that cheap players like Blacklock/Greenard (and to some extent Omenihu) are playing at a high-level right now. With the draft picks we’re hoarding we’re going to interject a ton of young talent onto the roster next year and the rookies aren’t going to need to immediately become starters. We’re also going have a S**T TON of cap space and can sign a few impact free agents if we want. If we get multiple early picks in a Deshaun Watson deal we’ll be in a tremendous position to rapidly rebuild

Anyone else getting sneaky excited for this team?

I still think we’re a long shot to have more than 6-7 wins, but the more I think about our current roster and coaching hires the more I understand what we’re going for.

Our o-line and back 7 on defense is deeper than last year and Tyrod Taylor is an accomplished QB with a TON of hunger to solidify himself as a full-time starter again. We have a ton of relatively young veterans on ‘prove it’ contracts who have all done things in this league along with some guys like Anthony Miller/KeKe Coutee/Justin Reid/Jacob Martin..etc at the end of their rookie deals who will be playing hard for an extension.

Culley is the ultimate ‘players coach’ and veteran assistants Pep Hamilton (along w Tim Kelly) and Lovie Smith will be the real X’s and O’s guys. I’m especially pumped for Pep Hamilton as him and Tyrod have experience together and seem to be really in sync. The emphasis on running game with RPO offense (that features lots of quick routes and RB screens) has a chance to give us a relatively unique offensive identity in the league.

On Defense our line will likely struggle mightily against the run and to generate consistent pass rush , but I think our LBers will make the front 7 overall better than last year.I actually really like our secondary!

50% of the roster wasn’t around during the BoB years and the team feels fresh. Here’s what I expect the starting lineup to be and it honestly isn’t that bad…especially since we overall have more depth/competition in my opinion than previous years (even if it’s meh talent overall).

QB: Tyrod Taylor

RB: David Johnson/Philip Lindsay/Mark Ingram

WR: Brandin Cooks

WR: Chris Conley/Nico Collins

Slot WR: Keke Coutee/Anthony Miller/Andre Roberts

TE: Jordin Akins/Pharaoh Brown

LT: Laremy Tunsil

LG: Scharping?

C: Justin Britt

RG: Tytus Howard

RT: Marcus Cannon (would rather it be Tytus)

DE: Shaq Lawson

DT: Maliek Collins

DT: Ross Blacklock/Jaleel Johnson

DE: Demarcus Walker/Charles Omenihu?

Edge: Whitney Mercilius/Jacob Martin/Jon Greenard/Jordan Jenkins?

LB: Zach Cunningham

LB: Christian Kirksey

LB: Kevin Pierre Louis

CB: Bradley Roby

CB: Terrance Mitchell

Nickelback: Desmond King/Eric Murray

FS: Lonnie Johnson

SS: Justin Reid

Returner: Andre Roberts

Who would the Texans take if we had our 1st round pick?

Speculation around the Texans 3rd overall selection would be the biggest question mark of the entire Draft if we still owned the pick.

After the trade demands and uncertainty of Deshaun Watsons legal troubles/public image would the Texans take a QB in this loaded class? Would we try and add a dynamic weapon like Kyle Pitts or Jamarr Chase to help overcome the Will Fuller departure? Would we try and trade back?

We’ve been mediocre to bad at Tight End since Owen Daniels left and Kyle Pitts would be a tremendous upgrade (and fantastic fit with Deshaun), so it would be very tempting but QB would put the Texans in a very flexible situation.

Ideally, I’d want us to trade back and get as many early draft picks as possible as this team is almost completely devoid of young talent and our entire defense can be upgraded, but if I had to take a pick here I’d go Kyle Pitts.

I think highly of Trey Lance, Justin Fields and Mac Jones as prospects, but I think there’s a good chance Deshaun Watson will only be suspended for the 2021 season and that this will play out in a way where his reputation will recover enough to where he will return in 2022 and be willing to play with us. If he settles and it becomes apparent that the claims were largely exaggerated/false then he’s going to want to avoid media spotlight and demanding a trade again would cause a circus.

Add Kyle Pitts and ride this season out with Tyrod and then make moves in 2022 when our cap situation will be really good. If the Texans know the Deshaun situation is really bad then def take a QB (I’d want Justin Fields, but think we’d take Mac Jones bc Easterby), but for now I think we need to continue operating as if Deshaun is part of the teams future.

What do you guys think we’d do?

Rankings mistakes of the BoB era

1.Failure to pay Duane Brown

The exit of Duane Brown tops the list as the pro-bowl LT’s exit triggered a series of desperate moves that has left the franchise devoid of young talent and assets. All DB wanted was to restructure his contract to get more guaranteed money and bump his annual amount to closer to where it belonged.

Instead of retaining the proven pro-bowler at the 2nd most important offensive position, the Texans traded him for a 2nd round pick and backup edge rusher – creating the worst oline in the NFL. To fix the mess upfront and protect their prized rookie QB, the Texans traded 2 1sts and a 2nd for Laremy Tunsil and spent a 1st and 2nd round pick on a tackle and guard.

Tunsil and Tytus Howard have been good, but bc of the assets lost to fix the offensive line the Texans have had little opportunity to add defensive talent to the team. Ross Blacklock and Lonnie Johnson are the only 1st or 2nd rounders the Texans have used on defense in the past 5 years and its really showing. I can’t imagine the defense being any good until 2022 at the earliest and this largely stems from greed and stupidity.

All the instability and tumultuousness of the franchise the past 3 years stems from this.

  1. Extending Whitney Mercilus

This one angers me so much and is directly on BoB. In 2019 it was obvious that Whitney was not the same player he used to be and DJ Reader was the priority. DJ Reader is one of the best run defenders in the game and made JJ Watts life easier.

For no apparent reason other than “veteran leadership” we made Whitney one of the highest paid pass rushers in the NFL on a 4yr/54m extension and let DJ Reader leave for the bengals at less money. Now we have the worst rush defense in team history and the worst OLB in the NFL according to PFF. Whitney has 12m in dead cap for 2021, preventing us from splurging on any replacements. Genuinely mind boggling how dumb this was.

3. Deandre Hopkins Trade

In a lot of ways I think Deandre leaving is a good thing for Deshaun Watsons development and the Texans offense overall. Deshaun progresses through his options better and makes quicker/smarter decisions. The main issue with this trade was the terms and the fallout.

Nuk is my all time favorite player and I wish we kept him, but the ramifications of his exit were more impactful than his absence on the field

BoB lost the locker room with this one. Hopkins was the best and most respected player on the team and nothing short of a mammoth return would be recognized as legitimate by the players. BoB lost most of the team after the KC playoff game and this was the straw that broke the camels back.

Ross Blacklock (who we got with their 2nd) doesn’t appear to have a promising future and David Johnson sucked as we all predicted. Doing this deal instead of finding a way to pay Nuk is ridiculous and BoB got all the s**t he deserved in the end for it.

4. Terms of Laremy Tunsil trade and lack of agreed upon extension

Laremy Tunsil has been great at LT. He’s a huge reason for our success last season and his presence gives me some hope that the Texans can be good again in 2021. Kenny also was a major contributor last season.

However, because BoB gave up the farm for him and Kenny Stills, Laremy had all the leverage and got himself an extension worth 4-5m more annual than it would have been had BoB made the trade contingent on Laremy signing an extension. You don’t trade 2 firsts and a 2nd to a rental you have to pay a year later.

I don’t know for sure if we could have gotten Laremy Tunsil (who we desperately needed post DB) with a lesser offer, but we definitely overpaid out of desperation. Not having a 1st or 2nd this year is debilitating – especially because our cap situation is 5m worse than it should be because BoB didn’t think to lock him in early.

I get why this trade happened the way it did and I’m a big fan of Tunsil, but I’d much rather have a 1st and a 2nd rounder right now than him on the roster.

5. Failing to pay Tyrann Mathieu

From my understanding, Honey Badger was expressing his love for Houston all season and repeatedly tweeted desire to stay with the Texans. Then Kansas City offered more and we didn’t match it and he understandably dipped.

I don’t know for sure if he would have signed with us if we matched the offer, but we should have done all we could to lock him in. He was a really good player for us and was a big part of the great defense that helped us get to the playoffs with Julien Davenport starting at LT in 2018. He’s been even better for KC and meanwhile our safeties suck.

If memory serves me right, Justin Reid had just had a great rookie year and we thought Andre Hal was going to still play so I understand why we didn’t want to splurge, but in retrospect we really should have done all we could to keep him.

6. Signing Brock Osweiler

This isn’t on BoB but happened when he was the coach. We hugely overpaid for Brock in desperation to attain a franchise QB after Schaubs meltdown. Brock sucked, but his failure opened the door for the best move in franchise history: trading up for Deshaun Watson.

With a dominant defense the Texans overcame Brocks deficiencies and somehow made the 2nd round of the playoffs (losing a competitive game at NE). We were able to move off his contract (costing us a 2nd rounder) the next season and got Deshaun Watson.

This was a bad signing (that at the time a lot of us were excited about), but it ultimately didn’t set the franchise back and we still had a good season.
