If the Bears get the first pick

There’s zero percent chance they’re taking Bryce Young.

The only scenario I could see happening is the Panthers, Saints or Jets trading up to 1 overall, but the amount of resources it would take to make that happen (at least 2 future firsts and multiple other picks) makes it extremely unlikely. Bryce isn’t a ‘cant miss’ QB prospect that’ll inspire a bidding war to trade up for

I love what I’m seeing from Christian Harris/Jalen Pitre and our DBs…if we happen to play winning football and beat the Jags or Colts we would almost certainly still get Bryce Young…everyone needs to calm down lol

Monday morning thoughts

– Given the circumstances, we made the right decision punting and taking the tie. All the angry comments I’ve been reading on this sub about this decision are really cringe.

– The Colts beat us 31-3 twice last year. Completely dominating us in the trenches on both sides of the ball each time. The Colts are one of the most physical teams in the NFL and we held up well for most of the game all things considered

– Yes, we should have won. In the NFL if you have a 3 possession lead at any point in the 4th quarter you should never lose. I get it, we s**t the bed and went completely anemic from the middle of the 3rd quarter onward. It sucked and was hard to watch, but we didn’t lose. We tied. In a few months if we’re somehow still contending for the playoffs we’ll be grateful that we punted

– Most games last year we looked physically overmatched and the talent gap was very apparent. I thought we looked like a real NFL team yesterday

– This game reminded me a ton of the Patriots game last year. In both games we took a seemingly insurmountable lead and had all the momentum late in the 3rd quarter (both games we had big flee-flicker plays in the 3rd) at home then the play-calling got conservative on both sides of the ball and we went completely anemic and collapsed

– In bigger moments thus far in Mills career, he’s had a tendency to get nervous, hold onto the ball longer and miss throws. This is completely normal for a QB at his stage of development, but given his lack of success at Stanford I am somewhat worried that he’s not clutch

– Mills had the ball 6x after we took a 20-3 lead and in those 6 drives we punted 5x and he lost a fumble. If we scored on any of those possessions we almost certainly would have won

– Mills played a good game overall and given that he’s a 23 yr old 2nd year 3rd rounder I think we should all be pleased with how he looked. This was probably the 2nd or 3rd best game he’s played in his career and it was against a good team, I’m excited.

– The play-calling down the stretch sucked. The 3rd and 1 run with Rex was just terrible

– The defenses overall numbers are ugly, but I thought they played well most of the game and made some gritty plays down the stretch that preserved the tie. Yes we got lucky with the missed FG, but when the Colts got to the 20 they made a TFL on a run then forced Matt Ryan to take a sack, making what should have been a 35~ yard FG a 42 yard one. They also forced a punt at the end of the 4th when I fully expected the colts to drive down and kick a game winning FG as time expired

– We’ve beaten the Rex Burkhead over-usage horse to death so I’m not going to expand on it as I’m sure the coaching staff has their reasons, but it was stupid and I hope they give Dameon more carries next week as he looked physical and explosive

– Chris Moore played a good game. Definitely earned the #3 WR job

– The initial advanced stats show Kenyon Green had a good game. I expect he’ll start next week or by week 3/4 at the latest. Overall I thought the Oline was solid. It’s great having Tunsil back even if he looked a bit rusty at times

– OJ Howard obviously made an immediate impact and I’m pumped we signed him. We targeted our tight ends a lot the first 2.5 quarters then stopped. We’re a better team when we involve them

– Brandin Cooks is our best offensive player and I’m he took off right where he left off last year. With this being said though, Mills tries to force him the ball too much and hopefully he looks elsewhere more

– Was great seeing Greenard play well. We really need him to build off his promising 2nd year and become a young star for us

– Jerry Hughes was probably the overall MVP for us. Great veteran signing. Hopefully he keeps it up!

– Maliek Collins had an impact as well against the best interior Oline in the NFL. Pleased to see it

– I thought Jaelen Pitre played well and looks like a star in the making. We expected this and hes delivering

– Stingley made a big time play to force a FG at the beginning of the 4th, but he still seems a bit lost in Zone coverage. PFF thinks he had a poor game, but I’m not concerned. I saw a lot of great things, including a play early in the game where he effortlessly got off his block and forced JT to take a bad angle. Also at the end of the 4th he got JT to go out of bounds short of the first down getting them to punt forcing OT

– Kaimi had a good game. Love seeing him start the season confidently

– Kamu, Jonathan Owens and Desmond King made a lot of plays and deserve shout outs

– Tie-ing is undeniably a weird feeling, but its def better than losing

Post game thoughts

It’s preseason so its important not to overanalyze things or assign much value to the outcome, but below are some thoughts I had after the game:

– Over the past 6 months we’ve hyped up all the good/promising things Mills does to the point that we forgot he’s still very unproven and was at times really bad last year. Things felt more difficult for Mills than they should have yesterday given the circumstances (playing against backups)

– Tytus Howard looked really good and was easily our best lineman out there. This has me excited

– The throw Mills made to Dorsett to setup the Collins TD was incredible. Rifled the ball 35 yards downfield on a rope between the CB and safety. There was almost no margin for error on the throw and Mills put it in perfectly. Incredible concentration by Dorsett to catch the ball and maintain possession with 2 feet down

– Overall Mills seemed a bit rattled and missed several easy throws, but he showed enough for me to not be concerned..the talent is definitely there, but it’s not a guarantee that he’s going to make the leap we all think he is

– the front 7 on the other hand did exactly what they were supposed to do going given the circumstances and dominated their oline. We probably blitzed a bit more than what would be expected in a preseason game, but love to see it

– I’m super hyped for Nico Collins and will 100% be drafting him late in all my fantasy leagues. He’s much bigger than I remember and looks like a guy who could legitimately develop into a #1 this year or next. Great draft pick

– Dorsett continues to impress me. There’s a reason he was a 1st round pick. Him and Mills clearly have good chemistry and I think he should be our 3rd WR

– I didnt think Mack looked as bad as others on this subreddit, but obviously Pierce should be the guy

– Dare Ogunowale was really impressive and Royce Freeman can def still play as well. Rex Burkhead probably shouldnt make this team

– Lovie Smith and the defense are definitely ahead of the offense. This is how it was last year so this isnt a surprise, but if our offense doesnt get more explosive theres no way we win more than 5 games this year

– Kyle Allen is a really solid backup QB, glad we signed him

– Jon Greenard, Roy Lopez, Kirksey and Grugier Hill all looked really good. We probably have the most ‘no-name’ defense in the NFL, but i think these guys have a chance to get a lot of recognition this year

– Thomas Booker was a good draft pick. He was our best dlineman in the 2nd half and will definitely be a big part of our rotation this year

– Our Dline depth is the best its been since 2019. I still think we’re going to be a bottom 10 rush defense, but we have some interesting personnel packages and a lot of solid pass rushers

– Stingley had 1 good pass break up and had a few moments where he looked lost in coverage. Glad hes getting to play and knock the rust off. He’s physically very impressive and I’m pumped for him to be on the team

– Didnt watch Pitre very closely, but seems like he’s continuing to ball

– Glad to see Kaimi making extra points

– I dont understand why we haven’t brought in a veteran tight end yet

– There’s definitely a lot of good vibes from the team and it seems like everyone’s bought in. Obviously we played more starters and this game meant way more to the Texans than it did to the Rams, but winning together the way we have is going to help the team become closer

Texans ride or die

I was born in Austin and I’ve seen every snap the Texans have ever had since I was 9 years old. I hate the cowboys, I chose the Texans over the Cowboys and I love this franchise more than anything.

I went to UT and grew up a diehard Longhorn fan, but honestly the Texans are all I REALLY care about

Real talk, the vibes around the team since we hired Lovie have been the best since maybe peak Arian Foster/JJ Watt circa 2013. I think we’re gonna win 8-9 games this year and surpirse the f**k out of people

The teams gonna get tight af this training camp. Band of brothers s**t. We have talent. If Davie Franchsie can be sorta the real thing we gonna grind W’s out

Some thoughts heading to the draft

Just watched the condensed game highlights of some of our games from last year and here are some thoughts:

– We absolutely need to get better in the trenches..we for the most part got bullied last year (Bills game, both colts games, first 3 quarters of the Rams game..etc) we looked like a college team playing an NFL team and that starts with controlling the line of scrimmage.

– The interior Oline is the biggest priority to me. We couldnt run the ball at all last year and it was probably the least physical Texans offense I’ve ever seen (which is really saying something). Okwenu or Evan Neal is definitely who I want at 3

– Overall the defense is ahead of the offense on this team. Our defense is still a bottom 5 unit but they actually werent THAT bad last year…especially given how futile the offense was. We completely lacked explosiveness and mostly got chunk yardage from trick plays or throws into double teams where we probably got a bit lucky. Outside of Cooks our WRs were basically never open. I wouldnt be mad if we went offense back to back and got a WR like Williams, Wilson or London at 13. Nico Collins did some good things at the end of the year, but we cant just operate under the assumption that he’s going to be a good 2nd option this year. Recent first round WRs have made immediate impacts and this class is loaded…let’s get a weapon! Could see us also taking the top WR on our board at 37 if we take best defensive player available at 13

– Kinda surprised we havent made a move on a tight end. We got basically nothing from our TE’s this year and a good safety blanket would be huge for Mills going forward. Hopefully Brevin Jordan can become this, but i wouldnt be opposed to a TE with one of our 3rds either..

– Our defense definitely has problems at every level but you could tell the unit was well coached last year and played hard. Really hope Greenard can stay healthy and that Roy Lopez or Ross Blacklock can develop into an impact player for us this year.

Lovie Smith is amazing news

It never made any sense to me that a career 89-87 head coach who made the Super Bowl was coaching behind Dave Culley who had never been a coordinator at any point in his 30+ year coaching career.

Our defense was significantly better than it was in 2020 and the unit seemed well coached the entire season. Our offense put a TON of pressure on the D all year and for the most part they kept us in a lot of games that should have been much worse blowouts.

The team clearly loved Lovie and he’s a way better candidate than Mccown or even Gannon who Eagles fans s**t on

Pep and Lovie were the real coaches of our team last year and lets run it back with them. Culley is a CLOWN and all this talk about ‘WHy dId wE fIRe cUlLeY tO HirE loViE’ needs to stop immediately

Brian Flores is also untouchable right now. You can’t hire someone who’s actively suing your parent organization..

I love the idea of Josh McCown and don’t understand the negativity

Josh had a great reputation in the NFL. His playing career was extended at least 5 years longer than it should have been because teams wanted him in their locker room and around their young QBs

The trend in all of pro sports is to have young, well-regarded, former players as head coaches. We fucked up letting Vrabel and Kyle Shanahan leave

We had fucking David Culley as our head coach this past year. Are we really mad about the notion of bringing in Josh McCown? Sure it would have been great if he was a coordinator or something for a year or two prior, but he played for 17 years…I’m pretty confident he understands how to coach and call plays.

Josh McCown is also a native Texan and definitely would represent the franchise well if he’s successful

I repeat. We had David Culley as our last head coach (and BoB before him). Why are we mad about this?

Skill position moves for next season

WR:

Retain Cooks, Collins and Amendola.

Sign a veteran WR to a mid-size deal ($4-8m annual with only 1 year guarantee) or a ‘prove it’ 1 year deal (potential options: DJ Chark, Jamison Crowder, Emmanual Sanders, Christian Kirk, Josh Reynolds, Cedric Wilson, Kalif Raymond, Michael gallup..etc). Ideally someone who’s a little bigger (6’3+) to compliment Cooks and Amendola who are both slot sized

Draft a WR relatively early. We really need to get more young offensive talent into the pipeline and I want us to use an early round pick on a WR. If we get draft capital from Deshaun Watson, I’d like us to target a WR with our 2nd 1st or one of our 2nds. If we don’t execute a trade before the draft, I’d want us to use a 3rd or 4th on a WR we like but prioritize other areas with first picks.

Brandin Cooks on his last year with the team still gives Mills a ‘go-to guy’ (and a dude we can look to trade before the deadline if we’re not competitive). Nico Collins showed a lot of promise, but think it would be useful for us to use a modest amount of cap space on a quality vet alongside Cooks and for us to get another dude in the WR pipeline. Collins can be the 3 to start the year and grow into being a 1 or 2 if he maximizes his potential. Think we can get Mills weapons here relatively easily

RB:

Retain: Rex Burkhead

Sign a relatively cheap veteran ($4m a year max with only 1 year of cap hit) on a short term ‘prove’ it deal (some candidates: D’onta Foreman, Marlon Mack, Devonta Freeman, Sony Michel, Melvin Gordon, Malcolm Brown, Latavius Murray, Tevin Coleman..etc). Ideally a guy who’s a little bigger to compliment Rex.

Draft a RB in the mid rounds (3-5) that we really like. We need a younger RB in our pipeline and ideally I’d like us to devote an early/mid round pick on a guy we feel can grow into becoming the starter by end of season.

I love what I’ve seen from Rex and think him and Mills vibe well, but he’s never been a feature back for more than a few games in his career and we definitely can’t assume he’s going to produce like this in a starting role next year. I’m cool with him going into next year as the starter and love what I’ve seen from him the last 5 or so games, but we definitely need to get another veteran RB to compliment/compete with him and draft a guy to get a talented dude in our pipeline.

We know Caserio likes having 3-4 RBs on his roster so I expect us to bring in a few other vets as well to compete in training camp

TE:

Keep Brevin Jordan

Sign: 2 veteran dudes on ‘prove its’ with one of them being a good blocking TE

Draft: maybe a late round pick to get another guy in if we really like one of the TE’s around in the 6th or 7th round but we shouldn’t draft one early

Brevin’s shown promise but we can’t assume he’s going to be a quality starter so we should bring in at least one veteran guy on a no risk deal to compete and play alongside Brevin. Brevin also isn’t a very big TE so might be good to have a veteran blocking guy too. I do really like Brevin, but I’ve been around this franchise for loo long to just expect a tight end to emerge as a good player lol
