Seeking volunteer opportunities this week (11/23-11/25) https://houstonnewmedia.org/seeking-volunteer-opportunities-this-week-11-23-11-25/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=seeking-volunteer-opportunities-this-week-11-23-11-25 Mon, 23 Nov 2020 03:06:03 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=009ff2d800da42c00c02faa149bf9219

I'm off work this week and normally volunteer at the Houston Food Bank but it seems they don't have any shifts this week. Looking for suggestions of other organizations that may need a helping hand.

Giving away my 2008 MacBook Pro, preferably to someone in need (e.g., students, stuck in a rut, etc.). https://houstonnewmedia.org/giving-away-my-2008-macbook-pro-preferably-to-someone-in-need-e-g-students-stuck-in-a-rut-etc/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=giving-away-my-2008-macbook-pro-preferably-to-someone-in-need-e-g-students-stuck-in-a-rut-etc Mon, 29 Jun 2020 21:15:39 +0000 http://houstonnewmedia.org/?guid=0fe26be5c1ffb1e73e875f8694fbe7e7

This laptop has gotten me through high school, college, and my masters. I don't really need it anymore. Because it's older the hassle of going through selling it isn't worth it to me. It works fine for someone that just browses or needs to get classwork done. Would prefer to give it to someone that needs a laptop instead of someone that will just strip it apart. This is not first-come-first-serve. Will see what responses I get over the next few days before deciding who is most in need.

Specs:

  • 15-inch
  • 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 6 GB RAM (self-upgrade)
  • 250 GB SSD (self-upgrade)
  • Software OS X 10.9.5 (Not entirely sure, need to double check this. If anything it's higher.)

Accessories:

  • Specs purple soft-shell case that I've used for forever and you're welcome to toss out.
  • Clear moshi keyboard cover that I've also used for forever, you're welcome to toss out but it keeps the crumbs out. Not invincible against Cheetos/Doritos fingers, I had to throw out my first one because of that.
  • Extra battery.
  • Extended cord and original power cord block.

Disclosures:

  • CD drive get's stuck, don't recommend using
  • Magnetic power connector is sometimes finicky and you'll need to wiggle to charge
  • Both batteries don't hold a charge for very long. Maybe 2 hours? I always keep it plugged in.
  • Gets HOT so I don't recommend using it directly on your lap.
  • There is a small indent in the metal the bottom edge of the top clam shell. Not visible when using.
  • It's heavy. Like 5 lbs. This is probably my least favorite thing.
