Pitchers on Roster by ERA+

This is our last off day of the season, so I figured now would be a great time to look at all of our pitching options heading into the playoffs

Brown 373 1.0
Stanek 321 2
Verlander 215 (Leads League, Qualified) 5.4
Abreu 194 1.2
Martinez (Minors, Why!?) 186 1.2
LMJ 164 1.1
Montero 158 1.1
Javier 146 3.3
Paredes (Minors) 146 0
Framber 144 3.6
Pressley 134 0.9
Smith* 111* 0.1*
Mushinski (Minors) 111 0.1
Bielak (Minors) 109 0.1
Maton (Majors, Somehow) 108 -0.1
Garcia 102 1.2
Nerris 102 0.4
Taylor (Minors) 101 0
Air Kitty 100 1.2
Blanco (Minors) 58 -0.2

* Will Smith’s Stats are only with the Astros, if Braves stats are included it changes to

Player ERA+ bWAR
Smith 101 -0.6

We are only allowed 13 in the post season, with at least 18 guys with above average pitching. 19 honestly, because being average as a starter is more valuable than being average as a reliever.

Astros Postseason # Watch

I’d been trying to update this in the Post-Game threads, but my son was sick over the weekend, so I was unable to really get on and post within a decent amount of time of the games ending

Magic # to clinch:

Playoffs: 6

Division: 11

Bye: 7 (Must win division to claim Bye)

1st Seed (AL): 16

In addition a 101 win season would guarantee a winning All-Time Franchise record at the end of a season for the first time in Franchise history.

We are currently 1 game over .500 All-Time (Best record among expansion teams)

The earliest we could clinch a playoff spot is Thursday 9/15, although I believe this weekend is a more realistic time frame.

The earliest we could clinch our division is Sunday 9/18, but again, I think adding an extra 3 or 4 days is a little more realistic of a time frame.

Wednesday 9/21 is the earliest we could lock up the 1 seed, but I do not expect to do that in the minimum time frame at all. But if we play well, hopefully within 3-5 days of that we could be all locked up and secure.

Astros Roster (Pre Yainer Diaz)

Astros Roster (Pre Yainer Diaz)

This is what I see right now. Yainer Diaz & Hunter Brown both will require space to be made on the 40 Man, as well as Yainer needing space on the 26 Man if the rumors of his call up are to believed. I’m assuming Pressley and Aledmys Diaz will serve as our \”September Callups\” meaning Hunter Brown will also Need a spot.

I’m guessing Goodrum / Hensley get removed from their respective positions to make room for Yainer. Martinez is probably going to be odd man out-ed again for Brown, but I do not know who you clear on the 40 Man. Either 1 of Dubin/Blanco/Solomon/Jones or a minor leaguer on the 40 Man moving to the 60 Day IL are my best guesses. But they’re just that, purely speculative guesses. I think Bielak still has some value, as a trade piece, or depth as an emergency starter for us. I also think there is still a chance he manages to be a decent MLB pitcher.

Try Mancini is our best defensive Left Fielder

As the title says, Fangraphs shows Mancini as the only person to play Left Field this season and have a positive value doing so.

Of course defensive metrics are always a little screwy, but this should be good enough to let him have some real playing time out their to see hoe he performs.

Worth noting, they show Alvarez has a stronger arm than Tucker, and while this makes sense because of Yordan’s size, I feel like Tucker’s arm is much more consistent.

That said, if Yordan could learn to consistently come in on his catches and help generate some extra momentum, at his size I think he could play a small corner outfield spot (MMP LF, Yankee Stadium RF, etc.) with above average defense.
