Little Spring Training sheet I worked up in Excel since I’m getting antsy. Figured I’d share ( I used Rays Dates because they’re the ones with the most flushed out and published info so far)

Read MoreIf the season were to start tomorrow, this is what our likely 26 man would be. We likely have enough capital to go after 1 more impact Free Agent still as well if the rumors are to be believed about what Crane wants to spend.
| Starting Pitching | Starter (Position) | Reliever | Bench |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Framber | 1. (DH) **Mattijevic** | 1. Pressley | 1. Hensley |
| 2. McCullers | 2. (C) Maldonado | 2. Montero | 2. Dubon |

| 7. (LF) Alvarez | 7. Maton | ||
| 8. (CF) McCormick | |||
| 9. RF (Tucker) |
β
I took some liberties with guessing for Lee and Mattijevic. Those are the 2 biggest question mark positions for us. Meyers also may see some time in AAA if we go after another outfielder (Like resigning Brantley), but that could also squeeze JJ back to AAA.
β
We have Yainer Diaz and Pedro Leon who are both going to try to be making the big league roster this season.
β
JP France, Forrest Whitley, Enoli Paredes, Parker Mushinski, Blake Taylor, and Brandon Bielak are all hopeful on the pitching side to get a shot at the bigs.
β
Shawn Dubin and Ronel Blanco are back there somewhere as well, but definitely further down.
β
I think Urquidy and Maton will be our most likely to be traded players. Urquidy has some value, but less upside than Garcia, and Maton isn’t bad, but slightly above average was well below average for our pitching staff last year. If 1 of Meyers or McCormick really take over CF this season, the other one will likely find himself on the trade block as well.
β
I imagine our current targets are OF & Catcher. Maybe a lefty reliever if one is available at the right price. With the Abreu signing I think Verlander may be gone for real, which makes me sad, but potentially puts us in the Contreras or Benintendi conversation.
β
Luke Voit could probably fill the DH spot if we aren’t sold on JJ Mattijevic or Yainer Diaz.
β
My personal preference would be re-signing Vazquez, and giving Yainer Diaz a bench spot. Allowing Vazquez to play everyday as a Catcher / DH with Yainer providing an option as a 3rd Catcher, while playing more 1B. It would also solove the DH / LF problem by allowing Yordan, Vazquez, & Diaz to rotate through the position with regularity. This would, however, push Lee and Mattijevic back down to AAA, but would allow Pedro Leon to battle with Meyers and McCormick if the FO thinks he could be productive at the MLB level this season (Which would fill the final whole of Left Field (LF/DH is a hole right now depending on where Yordan plays)
β
I also wouldn’t be opposed to re-sigigning Brantley as well, and allowing him to fill the DH / LF platoon with Yordan, and if McCormick plays well and Leon gets to the major league level, we could trade Meyers mid season to open up that role.

He can realistically play first (obviously), Left, and in short spurts he can probably handle third perfectly fine.
β
He could probably get away with playing 2B a few times a year as well.
β
This would help retain a player with a lot of Baseball knowledge, and also let him get off his feet more.
β
We may also see a resurgence in rate stats if we reduce his workload a little.
β
We could still sign a 1B, or opt to give Yainer Diaz / JJ Mattijevic / Hensley (I think he can play first) a shot at it.
β
Yuli likely would cost about $5MM for a 1 year deal, and I’m not too in love with the idea of Aledmys Diaz being re-signed because he is so inconsistent.
β
This would also give us kind of a safety net in case any of the young guys struggle too much.
β
After turning it on in the post season, I’d hate to see us let Yuli walk. But there are also so many other options at first I fell like we may regret committing to him over the other options.

r/Baseball removed my post because they hate fun lol
β
In game 1 the Mariners recorded 26 Outs from their Pitchers
β
In Game 2 they recorded 24
β
In Game 3 they recorded 54
β
That’s a total of 104 (34.2 IP)
β
The Yankees pitchers recorded
β
24 Outs in both Game 1 & 2 (48 Total)
β
27 Outs in both game 3 & 4 (54 Total)
β
This Comes out to 102 Total outs recorded by NYY pitchers (34 IP)
β
So Seattle played pitched 2/3 more innings against us despite playing 1 fewer game

I’ve flipped though both teams to try to figure out which pitchers will be the most likely to see tonight.
β
Severino and Valdez are starting. So they are a given. That leaves 12 other eligible pitchers for each team who could see action tonight.
β
Based on recent Workloads my best guesses are
β
β
| Astros – No | Astros – Unlikely | Astros – Likely |
|---|---|---|
| Verlander | Garcia | Abreu |
| McCullers | Javier | Stanek |
| Montero | Urquidy* | |
| Pressley* | Brown | |
| Neris* | Martinez |
Pressley got 4 outs last night, and Neris pitched as well. I think they are more likely than the rest of their category, but they will be avoided if possible.
β
Urquidy also is a complete unknown to me. He is the only pitcher on the ALDS roster we still haven’t used
β
I think Javier and Garcia are being avoided if possible since 1 of them will be used to start game 4 with the other one on standby in case it’s a short start
β
Montero had the roughest time of all of our pitchers and is likely unavailable unless necessary as a result
β
Abreu and Stanek are likely our primary leverage guys tonight, with Brown ready to go if Framber struggles to go deep.
β
I expect to see Martinez if we have an inning where the bottom of the order is lined up. He needs to see major league hitting again, but would probably be best to let him prove himself on the part that isn’t filled with super stars.
β
Again, don’t be surprised to see Pressley or Neris if the situation is right, but I think we only use either in a more limitted role than last night. We do have the off day tomorrow, so if the situation demands them I think Dusty is willing to go back to back (especially with Pressley)
β
β
| Yankees – No | Yankees – Unlikely | Yankees – Likely |
|---|---|---|
| Cole | Trivino | German |
| Cortes | Montas | Holmes |
| Taillon | Castro | Peralta |
| Loaisiga | Weissert | |
| Schmidt |
The Yankees best leverage arms are Holmes & Peralta, with Schmidt being # 3
β
Schmidt threw more pitches than ideal, and took the L last night. They probably attempt to avoid him if possible.
β
Trivino tossed 2 innings yesterday, so I wouldn’t expect to see him come out again today.
β
Montas isn’t particularly used to going out of the pen, so I would be shocked to see them do it 2 days in a row with him, unless the game goes to extras
β
Castro & Loaisiga are a little harder to pin. Castro pitched last night, with Loaigisa going the night prior (for 2 innings). Both have an ERA + under 100, so I feel like they are more likely to both get a rest day, so you can guarantee they only pitch at max strength. I’d say Loaisiga is the more likely of the 2, but I am not expecting either to show up today.
β
German is there in case the pitcher gets plucked early. I’d love to see him in the second lol, but I don’t know how early they’d have to pull a guy to see him.
β
Again, Holmes and Peralta are the best arms in the pen and neither pitched last night, so I expect them to make an appearance, especially with the off day tomorrow, no reason not to.
β
Finally, Weissert is the only reliever they have (outside of German) who hasn’t pitched in either of the last 2 back to back games. He’s arguably the worst pitcher on the roster for them (which is our weakness) But for a Bullpen that’s not fully rested, I expect him to get an inning against the bottom of our lineup if the situation is right.
β
My final prediction for Bullpen use tonight (just putting both sides at 9 innings)
β
| Astros | Yankees |
|---|---|
| Framber (6IP) | Severino (4IP) |
| Stanek (1IP) (I think this ining will be against the top/middle of the lineup) | Weissert (1IP) |
| Martinez(1IP) (I think this inning will be against the Bottom of the lineup) | Peralta (2IP) |
| Abreu/Pressley (1IP) | German IF Peralta only goes (2IP) |
| Loaisiga IF Peralta goes 2 (1IP) | |
| Holmes (1IP) |
One last note. Severino had the least IP out of all their starting pitchers lined up to start games in the post season. So I do not excpect him to go particularly deep, expect to see german throw possibly 4 if we get him Severino out in under 3 since they don’t have a lot of depth to bridge with right now.

Read MoreThe season is winding down, so I thought I’d compare the 2 best second basemen through their age 32 Seasons

| Player | Hits | Home Runs | RBI | OPS (fan stuff) | OPS+ | bWAR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Altuve | 1932 | 192 | 696 | .829 | 127 | 46.3 |
| Biggio | 1680 | 140 | 633 | .814 | 125 | 51.1 |
I see people think Jose Altuve is no longer in a great spot to get 3K hits, and I’ll admit, I prefer he get 200 hits every single year also, but Altuve is still in HoF company statistically, including the Hits category. Biggio’s WAR comes from him being like 3 times better on the Base paths, and better in the Field than Altuve.
