Houston runners, how are you handling the heat this summer?

I typically only run in the afternoons right after work. It helps me destress and provides a logical barrier between work and not-work, which is important for me because I work from home and hate my job. This is perfectly fine from October through May, but I’m having a harder time than usual this summer with all these 100 degree days with little cloud cover. I know running in the morning is the obvious solution, but I just can’t get myself to wake up earlier to do it, and it disrupts my whole routine. As for the evenings, I am also one of those people who can only run on a completely empty stomach if I don’t want to cramp up, so unless I eat dinner really late, not going to happen. I sometimes tough it out and just run a short, slow 3 miles at 5 pm, and it’s always absolutely horrible. My wife worries I will get heat stroke. I’ve been skipping more and more days, and I feel fatter and lazier. How’s everyone else handling it?

What are some international destinations you’ve found surprisingly difficult to get to from Houston?

Thought this might lead to some interesting discussion. I was looking up flights to the Philippines and noticed there seemed to be very few 1 stop flights available via ANA, and that’s with a 16 hr layover in Tokyo at around $900. Everything else is 2+ stops and way over $1000. United flies to Manila, but only from Guam, which you can’t directly fly to from IAH either. The only other direct flights from the US are via Philippines Air through LAX, SFO, or JFK. I know Manila is very far and demand may not be high enough to justify a direct flight, but I figured that demand would be at least high enough to have better options for getting to such a large city, especially since it seems there’s a decent amount of people of Filipino ancestry in Texas.

Anyways, I’m sure my assumptions are way off, as I’m no expert in airline economics. Have yall encountered any other destinations like this?
