Why Jerod Mayo Could Work

First off, I’m not saying I want Mayo but it’s rather that I don’t think it’s worth hitting the panic button if he’s hired. One of the main reasons why Belichick is successful is because he has 3 key factors

  1. He’s an excellent schemer and gameplanner and just an excellent coach all around.

  2. He has earned the respect and you just have to admit he knows what he’s talking about because he’s won so much. This is why he can be so blunt with players and they just have to take it on the chin.

  3. He’s more personable than you may realize. When I watch clips of him in camps/practices, he’s not a tyrant. There’s even stories about him telling jokes and just being chill overall.

With that said, many folks in his tree don’t have all 3 of those factors and too many of them are tyrants which is why it doesn’t pan out. Mayo, however, is likely to have the correct personality to actually carry on Belichick’s coaching style. If you listen to him speak and you learn about his background, you will learn why I say this. Go watch the your life video on him. I think his experience with being in business taught him how to be personable and HOW TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS. That’s what’s key.

Not only is he personable but I believe the rumors about Nick having a potential candidate in mind for a long time could very well be about Mayo. He’s watched Mayo coach not just as a coach but as a player. He led his team and became captain in his second season. He probably really understands what Belichick asks of him and understands the scheming. This is why Nick might like this coaching prospect, because he’s seen him to it for years.

TLDR- Mayo has the persona and relationship building skills that are necessary to successfully run a Belichick style of coaching that most other coaches in his tree don’t. Nick has seen Mayo as a player and coach, be an excellent leader and coach his teammates. This is probably why Nick is interested.

My Biggest Off-Season Fear

Howard has made it clear that he wants to play tackle and it’s clear that he’s best at tackle. My biggest fear involves the worst case scenario that would make me very unhappy with Caserio and coaching staff- that is that he trades Tunsil, keeps Howard at guard and drafts Neal or neglects to replace Tunsil all together. This, I can see creating a Brown type situation with Howard which will make him leave when he can to test the tackle FA market. It’s a waste of time, money and talent. If Tunsil can get us more than 1 pick, I can see Nick pulling the trigger on the trade but he absolutely must treat Howard as a tackle!

OL Next Year- A Probable Outcome

With the way things are shaping up, whether we want to or not, I think Tunsil is likely to be traded. His contract is just not good, he’s not helping much in the run game and Tytus is quite good at LT anyways. Judging by how he never returned to the field, it’s entirely plausible the Texans will take calls. Tytus also apparently is having conversations with the team about being a tackle and not moving him around. With that being said, I think the team will trade Tunsil, put Tytus at LT and Heck at RT.

Now I know y’all aren’t high on Heck but he is probably an average RT or can get there with a bit of time. Therefore, the Texans will focus on the interior line, drafting or signing FA guards and centers that can both play roles in pass blocking and run blocking. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they left Neal on the table at 3 and just chose to take another player or trade down instead. Heck can play another season and if need be, get replaced another off season. There’s too many things to address to be that nitpicky.

I think the Texans should focus on acquiring picks and then building their interior OL and their front 7 first. I’d also be on the lookout for a WR that wins on routes and gets separation quickly and a TE that can both block and catch in the first 3-4 rounds if there’s one that fits. As far as RBs, we can take one late in the draft or go UDFA this year and be fine. DBs are still a need but we can get by with serviceable guys if we appropriately build the front 7. I think getting Mills more immediate help and establishing a front 7 is more important than elite DBs this year. Of course there has to be the right players for this though.

TLDR- Tunsil finna get traded. Howard- LT, Heck-RT. Draft and sign FA IOL. Focus on front 7 and building offense for Mills. Find serviceable elsewhere until next year.

Looking for an OC

Suppose the rumors are true and the Texans fire Culley and his staff. I’ve been growing more fond of the idea of a defensive head coach, in particular Dennis Allen. Now I’m trying to think about OC candidates, while also bearing in mind we need to continue to develop Davis Mills and meet him where he is regardless of if he’s the long term answer or not. How would you feel about giving the job to Jim Caldwell for OC? If not, who are some candidates you’d have in mind? (For the love of God please don’t say Joe Brady or Jason Garrett)

Evaluating Mills/Texans Offense in the second half vs Seahawks

https://youtu.be/Q6e-pUVhI64

I would say that in the 2nd half, 2 of the plays they showed that were on him. @10:51 he has to get that ball out quicker or move on to Conley. The defender does a good job there. @11:02 that’s just a bad throw- looks like his feet got happy. Other than that he needs either better play calling or for his receivers to win on routes quicker. Also that OL/blocking scheme is not consistently helping him. For example, @11:33 his LG and C are holding and Heck is getting bullied so he can’t even roll out to his right to hit his intended receiver (it looks like he saw the #2 receiver open). At the same time this is one of the two times he has to trust his arm to get that ball out fast and accurately as he could have made the throw without moving from the pocket but he seems unsure about his release time or arm strength (I’m not entirely sure which at this point). @9:24, he should just have his TE block because clearly it’s a cover 1 with a blitz and that TE route ain’t helping at all. Instead, if the TE blocks there, he could have bought an extra second and Mills could have seen that Cooks was jammed and hopefully that means Collins is his 2nd read and he could get it to him instead. Overall not bad for a rookie but I still want him to work on that arm, particularly arm strength and release time. Can’t wait to see more, as we play the Jags and then a tough test against the Chargers.

Put yourself in Caserio’s shoes. What you doin?

Obviously TK gotta go. At this point it might actually be detrimental to the development of your young guys. The problem is that if TK goes you might as well get rid of Culley too since you don’t want to strap any potential new HCs with a lingering OC they don’t want- that is unless you plan on keeping Culley for the long haul, in which case you can just get a new OC. If not then you fire both and let your HC search dictate the job status for Lovie and the other staff members. The other option (which I think is highly likely), is to fire TK and promote Pep Hamilton to OC which allows you to reasonably keep Culley for another year. What would y’all do?

Another thing is about the draft. Let’s assume you’re able to trade away DeTraitor and get at least one extra FRP this year. I think even if you’re picking top 2, you can’t ignore the attraction of trading down. You might miss out on a sure star pass rusher but the pass rush isn’t the biggest problem. You have so many holes to fill and potentially you could trade down both FRPs. Let’s say you could turn 2 high picks into maybe 6 picks. What would you do? Would you trade down both, just one or no trade at all? Of course there are some assumptions made but let’s be hypothetical yet realistic.

And finally, yes yes I know you would fire Jack and force McNair to sell the team ok blah blah I get it.

After further evaluations…

I’ve been watching more QB tape for this years draft class and I think I’ve arrived to my final conclusion. First off, I’m completely fine and even on board with not taking any QBs this year, although I disagree with many people’s reasoning on why. I’m only interested in 2 QBs this draft year, the first being Kenny Pickett. He’s the most pro ready QB in this draft but I still think there’s the question about his hand size and also I’m not comfortable yet with his ability to get rid of the ball quickly. He holds on to the ball way too long and I just don’t know how he’ll translate. Corral is pretty raw, moreso than I originally thought. He’ll need a lot of development and still definitely need to sit out a year imo. I love his intangibles though. I wouldn’t mind taking either one but I think it’s best to skip for now. Bonus: I predict Carson Strong to the Steelers.

With that said, looking at Mills I still really believe he struggles with confidence in his own arm and rightly so. Not only is the power inconsistent but his accuracy is on and off too. If he can work on that this off-season, he’ll take a nice step forward and we can begin a reevaluation then- preferably with a new OC and better protection/supporting cast. I’m also I’m agreement with the idea of bringing in Minshew or another capable QB to give Mills competition (we’ll need a backup anyways and I don’t think anyone wants more Tyrod).

Ok now here’s where my beloved hot takes come in: after the 2022 season and if we determine we need to move on from Mills, then there are options in the draft. I think it is absolutely fated, for the purpose of comedy and out of sheer irony, that we will take Spencer Rattler. I’m joking but at the same time it’s fate. Anyways, I don’t think we’ll land Young unless we go 0-17 and score less points than the lions (no one wants this especially if we make coaching staff changes and intend to have a good draft this year). There are other options but I still have a little hope for Rattler. Maybe he’s been humbled, but I love his release and athletic ability. I think his arm is sufficiently strong BUT in order for me to buy in, I want to see better footwork, better decision making, better ball placement and he absolutely has to start getting rid of the ball faster.

More takes for this sub to hate

Ok first off, I’ve looked at all the popular options at QB this year except for Howell and I gotta say, I’m starting to like Pickett. I still like Corral a bit more but I would be just as happy with Pickett as well. Now I know we disagree about taking a QB yadda yadda whatever but if the Texans do take one of those two, we will likely be better off (ps I don’t think we’ll land Young next year unless we go 0-17). Ok now for a little less of a hot take- I’m still thinking about coaches we should hire because whether fired this year or not I doubt Culley will be here for long. With that said, I’ve said Kellen Moore before but lately I’ve been thinking about maybe Eberflus as HC not only because of how the Colts defense is pretty solid but also pretty disciplined when I watch them. For OC I’ve been thinking Matt Mumme would be an interesting candidate. Why? Well a son of Hal Mumme who is one of the father’s of the air raid system, has shown he can put his own taste on it and schemes up some pretty creative plays. Not only this but I think he could help young QBs get the ball out quick per the rules of the air raid and that could ease some issues caused by the OL not performing.

Edit: scratch that maybe Pickett over Corral…

NO WE DON’T WANT JOE BRADY

If I see one more Texans fan advocate for Brady I’m chunking bricks. Listening to the Panthers fans he sounds exactly like Tim Kelly- play calling is predictable to the point where defenders are talking about it in post-game. Calls the same plays over and over. Had 2 successful seasons, one of which was in college and both of them carried by talent (CMC). Worst OC they’ve ever had apparently. Sound familiar? Yeah exactly. Now let’s hope the Texans F/O don’t make the mistake of thinking Brady would be much of an upgrade. HARD PASS
