Alright fine…

Since many in this sub didn’t like my plan, now I’ll ask you. Since y’all don’t want to take a franchise caliber QB a little early, suppose you foolishly pass on Corral, what are your plans for QB? Do you take another QB later on in this draft (who)? Do you tank next year again (unless you plan to go 0-17 good luck getting Bryce Young) and take a QB? Who do you have your eyes on? Or do you not take a QB at all in these next 2 years?

How to be good in 2-3 years (playoffs good)

First off I’m ready for all the downvotes and the hate this post will get but oh well I hope it happens anyways.

To start, I’m in favor of firing Culley and TK immediately as the season ends. Then get rid of D4 for draft capital asap. Then I’d bring in a coach who’s proven they can scheme an excellent balance of the run and pass game, a reliable play caller, and has done so for multiple seasons. That person is Kellen Moore. He would be my HC of choice and as for the rest of the staff, we will replace, add to and remove coaches as we see fit. Draft time rolls around and no matter what this sub says, I still want Matt Corral. If I need to trade down I will. Here’s the nice part though, we could still get Hutchinson/Kayvon/Stingley or whoever and Corral if we get a good spot from our D4 trade. With the rest of that draft and F/A I’d hope to build that line because hot take, I’m also trying to trade Tunsil for a first. The contract is abysmal and the run blocking just ain’t it. So now I also need another veteran QB who’s going to be better than Tyrod at running my system for Corral to learn behind until he wins the starting job. That can be pretty much any average QB. In addition, this off season I’m trying to re-sign key players like King and Malik Collins. I’m dumping bad contracts like DJ’s and making room to find a young safety and/or corner. Ok so the defense may take a hit for a season but next draft you can go heavy on defense. Now by the 2023 season, you have a young franchise worthy QB already ready to play, a good coaching staff, young talent filled defense, rising offensive weapons in Collins, Brevin Jordan and whoever else you draft and not to mention a plethora of cap space is likely. And then you’re right back in playoff contention.

You’re Nick Caserio. What’s your off-season plan this year?

Don’t say stuff that’ll never happen like “fire Easterby” or “make Janice sell the team”. If I’m Nick, I’m wasting no time firing Culley. The product is unwatchable. I’m letting Culley and TK at least and I’m going to find another young coach or at least a young smart OC. Secondly, I’m praying DeTraitor has settled so I can ship him for picks. After I fill out my new coaching staff I’m looking for F/A and evaluating which players to re-sign. You have quite a bit of cap space now so choose wisely to fill in some positions (I’m really hoping there’s a young guard we can poach). Draft night, idc what anyone says in this sub but I’m taking Corral if he’s there. He passes my eye test and I think he’ll translate nicely if you give him the right environment. The rest of the draft and F/A I’m making sure I’m stacking my OL with young talent to pass and run block. Corral can sit for a year, he doesn’t have to be thrown into the fire. The rest of the season is probably being used to evaluate if we want to re-sign Taylor or if we should go get another veteran to start. If that veteran gets hurt then I’ll play Mills who should really take this off-season seriously. As for defense, even though OL is priority, you should have enough capital to get a decent corner, LB and/or safety and that’ll have to do for now. I’m also going to sign plenty of UDFAs.

Does Mills have an arm problem or a calculation problem?

I was watching the summary of this week’s game and I noticed what I’ve been seeing in Mills is overall pretty consistent- his decision making is largely fine but sometimes the throw itself is what causes the problem. I found that to be the case with both of his interceptions this week. You can see where he’s trying to go with the ball and the decision is fine, even if not the best, but the throw is bad. I’ve been seeing this over all of his games that he’ll have a throw where the ball placement is poor. This was something he struggled with at times in college too. However, I’m not sure it’s necessarily his arm power, maybe with so little experience and starts, he hasn’t yet figured out ball placement consistently. It’s like he underestimates where he needs to put the ball or can’t calculate how much of a spin he needs to put on the ball. What do you guys think? I really hope he figures it out.

This really didn’t have to be a 5 year rebuild. What should they do next?

Imo the Texans have young talent that they should be exploring in this lost season.

The DL isn’t stacked but it’s got young promising players in Lopez, Blacklock and Greenard and some valuable veterans like Collins, Martin and Jenkins who you can transition out of as rotational players. They need to stop messing around with you g players development like Charles Omenihu who is inexplicably not in the rotation. The LB core needs an overhaul in the draft for sure and so does most of the secondary. Reid is still promising and Lonnie can learn but shouldn’t be starting at this point. Gotta find DBs and LBs and add at least 1 star level pass rusher which isn’t hopeless to do in 2-3 years.

The offense needs to be rebuilt at the trenches. You either move Howard back to RT or forget about it and have to rebuild every position at the line because he just ain’t getting it at LG. Tunsil only has 2 or 3 years left on his contract so you can put that position off until he has 1 year left. Britt is not the center for this team and Max Scharping has just been destroyed. WR wise, you can get away with Cooks as WR1 for maybe another 2 years, hope Collins develops nicely and then maybe look to spend a high pick somewhere down the line on another WR. TE group is serviceable although you really need guys to block but you don’t need to spend high picks there yet either (btw Brevin should be getting a chance otherwise why did you draft him?). RB room is a tragedy. Scottie Phillips, even if he were as bad as DJ and Lindsay should be the 1-2 combo with Ingram.

As for Mills, he has shown quite a bit of good but also some concerning bad things and if he can’t fix those bad things by the end of the year, I’m taking Corral with one of my first round picks. Also, it’s clear they don’t trust him. The play calling feels so restrained because they don’t trust him. I’d say just let him rip it. Got nothing to lose in this lost season.

What do you want to see the Texans do for the quick turnaround (I predict I will see a lot of “fire David Culley”s and “Sell the team”).

EDIT: The main reason I feel this way is because of the draft capital we could get from the D4 trade. It hinges on how well that goes down.

One thing about Mills tonight

One thing I saw that I really want Mills and the coaching staff to build on is his leadership and command of the offense. What I mean is, when Mills took that first sack, you could argue that he should have called protections or called a hot route or whatever but he didn’t. He seemed to just get to the line and snap the ball. However, after that, it was as if someone told him to slow down, don’t be in a rush, evaluate the offense and the defense on the field and command the offense. Since that point, I saw him pointing out Mike’s, changing plays, directing guys on the offense, etc. He said it himself in an interview that he likes to be able to command and run his own offense. I think if they can build on the fact that he’s already looking that confident and already doing those kinds of things, it will help him grow faster. One thing about Tim Kelly is that he doesn’t seem to have an ego. He asks players for their input in the offense. I think Kelly and Mills will work well together. Obviously it’s early but I’m glad he’s doing the things that fit his skill set already, because it’s so early for him. Hope he pans out.

PS: Driskell looked awful.
