The Smokehouse Creek Fire, which began Feb. 26, has spread more than 1 million acres, or about 1,600 square miles, across the Texas panhandle and a small portion of Oklahoma.

In addition to paying civil penalties, Apache agreed to undertake projects worth at least $4.5 million to ensure hundreds of its oil and gas wells in both New Mexico and Texas comply with state and federal clean air regulations and offset past emissions.
