Despite a May 8 committee vote, House Bill 2744 missed a key deadline for consideration by the full House. The bill will not become law this session, but families of the Uvalde shooting victims said they will continue advocating for change.

House Bill 2744 is a top priority for the families of the 19 children and two teachers who were killed in Uvalde last May. The bill now heads to the full House.

Senate Bill 14 would prohibit doctors from providing transition-related treatments to minors. The House is expected to debate the bill next week.

The Texas House advanced House Bill 5, which would allow large businesses to pay reduced school property taxes. The bill is meant to replace Chapter 313, which expired in December.

After two years of reforms, officials said Texas’ power grid is “more reliable than ever.” But high demand and low generation could cause issues during extreme weather.

Hundreds of protesters were at the Capitol ahead of an expected vote on Senate Bill 14, which would prohibit doctors from providing gender-affirming treatments to minors. The House pushed back its vote until later this week.

The proposals would increase the criminal penalties for people who manufacture or distribute fentanyl, particularly if the drug leads to someone’s death. Combatting the fentanyl crisis is a top priority for Gov. Greg Abbott and other state leaders….

House Bill 11 would provide additional support for teachers through residency and mentorship programs. House Bill 100 raises minimum salaries for school employees and adjusts how much state money schools receive.

House Bill 18 is aimed at giving parents more tools to protect their children online. If the bill becomes law, teens would have to get parental approval to create social media accounts.

Making schools safer is a top priority for many lawmakers and state leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott.
