United Airlines, in what it said is a first for a major airline, will now allow groups of up to five people to pool their miles.

Southwest Airlines Co. said this week it is making changes to its Rapid Rewards program, following the lead of Delta Air Lines’ changes last month.

Despite better-than-expected Q3 earnings, shares of United Airlines fell after the carrier said possible higher fuel prices and a prolonged conflict in the Mideast would contribute to its financial picture next quarter.

United’s new boarding procedure will affect passengers in the airline’s boarding groups 4, 5 and 6.

The order is part of United’s plan to use larger airplanes on routes currently served by smaller planes.

The moves come after a lengthy investigation by the U.S. Department of Transportation into a disability complaint filed against United by Engracia Figueroa.

Michael Leskinen will replace Gerry Laderman, who is retiring in September 2024 after working for the airline for more than 30 years.

The executive has worked for the Chicago airline for more than 30 years.

International travel demand is growing at twice the domestic rate, according to United Airlines executives.
