Astros Prodigal Sons

With the return of Correa after about 3½ seasons in Minnesota, I've been reminiscing about other players who returned to Houston after wandering in the wilderness. Here's who I could think of:

  • Joe Morgan: 1963-1971, 1980 – Morgan did pretty decently for himself in eight seasons with Cincinnati, winning two MVPs and two World Series rings. He technically spent two more seasons (-ish) with the Astros, but justifiably wears a Reds cap on his Hall of Fame plaque. For one season, Morgan and Nolan Ryan were teammates!
  • Ken Caminiti: 1987-1994, 1999-2000 – Like Joe Morgan, Caminiti won his MVP in between his two Houston stints. He was part of the Padres squad that ousted Randy Johnson and the Astros in the 1998 NLDS, but that team ultimately fell to the Yankees in the World Series.
  • Mike Hampton: 1994-1999, 2009 – Hampton became somewhat infamous when he signed a fat contract with the Colorado Rockies in 2001 because of Denver's "good schools," then proceeded to post a 5.75 ERA over two seasons with the Rockies. He then spent most of the rest of his career off and on the injured list with the Braves. He also managed to hit seven homers in 2001… interestingly, although he won a Silver Slugger with Houston in 1999, his only Astros home run came during his 2009 cameo.
  • Brad Ausmus: 1997-1998, 2001-2008 – The most hilarious instance of this phenomenon in my opinion. The Astros traded Ausmus to Detroit after the 1998 season to free up room for rookie Mitch Meluskey to take over as the starting catcher, then two seasons later they traded Meluskey to Detroit for Ausmus. Ausmus played eight more seasons with the Astros; Meluskey played eight games with the Tigers. At least Detroit had Ausmus for his lone All Star appearance in 1999…
  • Justin Verlander: 2017-2022, 2023-2024 – I mean, y'all should still remember this one. The Astros weren't willing to foot the bill for a big contract when they let Verlander walk to the Mets after his second Cy Young season with Houston, but they were willing to get him back for the stretch run like seven or so months later when the season didn't pan out quite the way the Mets had hoped.

…who else do you remember?
