Astros need an in-house solution for the Center Field black hole.
I was taking a look at the available options for CF next year and it is pretty bleak. Starting with the trade candidates:
-
Nimmo has 3 WAR so far this year, super good fielder with a 117 OPS+. A lefty hitter. The catch is, the Mets have money to spend and would likely want to resign him.
-
Judge. This would be one for the ages, but highly unlikely. He is also not a natural CF and Minute Maid is deep in center.
-
Ian Happ has a .278 BA with a 124 OPS+ in Wrigley. With one year of arbitration left, he is more likely to be traded mid-season. The Cubs are not sure what to do with him right now.
-
Cedric Mullins is a good player but is under control for three more years, and will likely command a big price tag.
-
Bryan Reynolds from the Pirates might still be traded, and he would be a good option at 125 OPS+ and average defensive skills.
As for the free agents:
-
Kiermaier is a great defender but coming off of surgery next year. Batting .228 with an 89 OPS+ in 63 games, which is not a big upgrade. Just to compare, McCormick has the same BA with a 107 OPS+.
-
The rest of the bunch is not better than what we have. Kike Hernandez is batting .206. Jackie Bradley Jr. is a sneaky pick but his defense has not been as good this year. Kevin Pillar is a big question mark, also coming off of surgery.
I think given all this, we need to be more focused on having one of our pieces as an everyday starter. Chas is a promising candidate and I want to see what he can do with more ABs. Meyers could hit the reset button and become great again. Pedro Leon is lurking in AAA. Trying to overpay in a trade would probably not work out for us.
